Vishnu(Vishr = to pervade)
One who pervades the entire universe, both animate and inanimate.
He is the preserver God of the Trimurti.
Whenever evil is on the ascendent, Vishnu descends on hearth to destroy evil.
The number of these periodical reincarnations, Avatar, changes according to differnent schools of tought.
The classical number of ten, Dasavatara, was fixed approximately
in the tenth century a.c.
Vishnu has four hands: the first holds a sankha-conch shell
indicating spread of the divine sound "Om", called
Panchajanya (or Sankha); one holds a chakra-discus,
a weapon, symbol of the wheel of time, Sundarsana; one holds
a mace, Komodaki, indicating the power; one holds a Padma-lotus,
on the head he wears the King's tiara.
His wife is Lakshmi
His vahana (vehicle) is the eagle Garuda.
