OPERATION DESERT SWEEP

An EOD/Medic's View of Kuwait

1991-1993

"es-selamoo alaykoom!" (This is a greeting in Kuwait) it means "Peace be upon you".

I lived and worked in Kuwait for a year and a half after the Gulf War as a Medic for the American Mine Clearing Teams.

Many of my friends were interested in the pictures I took while I was there, so I thought I'd make this page so others could enjoy the pictures also.

I arrived in Kuwait on 28 Dec. 1991.Pic of Camels

Pic of Mine

We not only cleared the mines from the hundreds of miles of mine fields, but we had to clear the areas of all war materials, Tanks, Unexploded BombsUnexploded 1000 lb. bomb,Bunkers, WeaponsAnti aircraft Missile, etc.

It has been asked of me many times "Did anyone get hurt while you were there?" and I am sad to say "Yes". We lost 2 Americans and 1 Indian, we used East Indian menEast Indian Men(from India) as laborers. There were also 2 seriously injured Americans, one I had to treat when he knelt down on a mine a blow his leg off. The last I heard he was doing fine.

I have to give the American EOD (Explosive Experts) men credit, You sure wouldn't fine me walking into a mine field.. The head of the mine field teams told me once "You make a mistake in the mine field, the mine field is UNFORGIVING". They are a Brave group!

Kuwait Towers, KCKuwait City

Kuwait City is not only the Capital of Kuwait but also the biggest city in Kuwait. Two of our favorite places to eat was Pizza HutPizza Hut , KC and Chi-Chi's Restaurants. They reminded us of home.

Below are some other pictures of Kuwait City.

Al Jabar Air BaseAl Jabar Air Base

The first area we had to clear was a Kuwaiti Air Base called "Al Jabar". When Iraq invaded Kuwait they attacked the base, then when the Gulf War started We attacked the base, so you can guess what the base looked like when we arrived to clean it up.

As we gathered the mines and munitions, we would give the good items to the Kuwaiti Army and then stack up the rest and at the end of very week we would blow up what could not be saved.
