MAN ARRESTED AFTER BABY DIES

An investigation has been launched into the death of a ten-month-old baby girl. A post mortem has been carried out and it is believed the little girl drowned. Police said further tests were being carried out and the file on the case will then be passed to the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide if any charges should be brought.
The baby,Pagan Kinch, was taken to Wigan Infirmary by her parents, Rachael and Trevor, at about 10pm on Friday. She was immediately examined by doctors but pronounced dead soon afterwards and detectives opened a full investigation. They taped off the family home in Banner Street, Lower Ince, while they carried out their investigation.
Police arrested a 29-year-old man but he was later released without charge. Det Insp Steve Baldwin, of Wigan police, said "A post mortem examination has been carried out by a Home Office pathologist, but further tests are still required. However, the cause of death is unlikely to be anything other than drowning. A local man was arrested and questioned and has been released without charge. The circumstances of this case will be reported to the coroner and to the Crown Prosecution Service."
Police described the baby's parents as "very distressed" and say they are still coming to terms with what has happened. The family were too upset to talk and neighbours said they were shocked by what had happened.

NEW MAYOR INSTALLED

The widow of Wigan's last mayor has officially taken over the town's top role.
In a moving ceremony at the Town Hall Coun Evelyne Smith was installed as the new mayor with her daughter Elaine taking the role of mayoress.
Coun Smith paid tribute to her late husband Bill, who died last month at the age of 73, after losing his fight against cancer. She said, "This is not how I envisioned this mayoral year would turn out, but I know that Bill would want me to carry on and I thank you all for letting this happen. Bill had many talents. His greatest ability was to relate to people whatever their rank or standing.
"I cannot emulate Bill and I would not want to. With Elaine as my mayoress we will be looking forward to a new millenium and I dedicate the remainder of the mayoral year to Bill's memory.
"I also feel that it is fitting to keep the same charities during the remainder of the year, which are the St John Ambulance, Sports Mobility and Crossroads for Carers."

MISING TODDLER FOUND

A police investigation was launched after a restless toddler wandered out of his bed and onto the dark streets of Wigan in the early hours of Sunday morning
The curious two-year-old went on the prowl after waking up and unlocking the back door of the Norley Hall house where he was staying.
When he was eventually discovered by a local resident, who called the police, the little boy was lost and wanted to find his mummy.
Police collected him and took him to Wigan Infirmary for a check up while they waited for his 22 year-old mother to call the next morning when she discovered he was missing.
Insp Andy Eckersley of Wigan police said, "The boy and his mum were staying at a friend's house. Apparently he is quite adept at opening doors, and when he is at home, his mum has to bolt and lock everywhere to make sure he doesn't escape. Because they were staying elsewhere, the usual precautions weren't taken and he managed to let himself out of the house and went wandering about. We just looked after him and late on Sunday morning his distraught mum phoned to say he had gone missing. Needless to say, we got them back together again straight away."

WARRIORS INTERNET SITE VANDALISED

Internet users have been publishing pornographic pictures and leaving abusive slogans on the Wigan Warriors Internet site.
The message board has now been shut down by bosses pending a revamp and relaunch at the beginning of December
Wigan Warriors media manager Dave Swanton said, "We are fully aware of the situation and we are able to trace the Internet supplier of the people who put these messages on. We should warn them in effect that what they are doing is illegal.
"When the site is relaunched people will have to enter a password to get in and if that password is banned, then they will not be able to."
It has been claimed that some of the abuse has been left by Latics fans. John Heeley editor of the unofficial Latics site'Cockney Latic' said, "There is a line that should not be stepped over and if this person is a Latics fan then they obviously have. This person was over the top. If I saw anything like that on my forum, it would go straight away. I am sure Andrew Hudson who runs the official Latics site would do the same thing.
"You are always going to get people having a go at players, but this is too much."
