BOGUS DOCTOR JAILED FOR 8 YEARS

A bogus doctor who administered morphine and other drugs to a man dying of cancer has been jailed for eight years.
Michael Harris, 34, had only three months training in chemistry on a Wigan and Leigh college course, Bolton Crown Court heard. Harris had dropped out of a chemistry course at Wigan and Leigh college but had "completely taken in" his girlfriend of the time together with family and friends, by telling them he was studying to become a doctor. He had even posed for photographs in a cap and ceremonial gown and made excuses for the lack of a ceremony.
He pleaded guilty to administering a noxious substance, two offences of obtaining money by deception, indecent assault, procuring sex by threat, blackmail and causing Pauline and Jonathan Hockin to administer noxious substances.
The court heard that Harris, of Grange Park, St. Helens, had always wanted to be a doctor, but was not clever enough, so he invented a life to act out his fantasies.
Prosecuting, Mr David Friesner said the defendant, a member of the Freemasons Lodge in Liverpool, had become friendly with David Hockin, who was suffering from bowel cancer. On one occasion Harris had taken four slow release morphine tablets, mixed them with four tablets for his bowels, crushed them with concentrate morphine and injected the liquid into David Hockin's mouth. Mr Hockin's ex-wife, Pauline, who now lives in Hindley Green, and his son, Jonathan, 17, also administered the drugs in the same way after watching Harris.
Mr Friesner said that in another case Harris had befriended a woman and performed intimate examinations. The prosecutor also told the court that Harris had, on another occasion, procured sexual intercourse from her, by making threats to her and her children. He also made her hand over 500 pounds she had made by selling furniture. Harris also took several thousand pounds off another man, to pay off debts run up by the man's son.
Mr Thomas Fitzpatrick, defending, said that from an early age Harris was doted on by his parents and had spent time with his father, who was a porter and volunteer at St Helens Providence Hospital. "He wanted to become a doctor, but he was unsuccessful because he was lazy and not clever enough, whatever, he did not make it. He could not bring to his parents the fact that he was a failure."
He said that to Harris, having the ceremonial photograph taken had not indicated some form of future plan but was to enable his deception to continue. Harris found it difficult to extricate himself from his lies which had had a snowball effect.
"His persona had been nurtured by people's admiration of doctors but he was, in fact, a nobody in reality." Mr Fitzpatrick said Harris was "broken hearted and repentant." He also said that Harris had been a good friend of David Hockin and had wanted to help him.
Jailing Harris, Judge Gillian Ruauax said, "You are a weak individual who started this deception because you could not meet the necessary educational qualifications to enter the mediacal profession. I took meticulous planning and all with breathtaking audacity. Your great reputation was not backed up by your achievements."

RESIDENTS FEAR FOR KIDS SAFETY

Residents on a Wigan estate are fearing for children's lives because of a dangerous derelict pub which they say is like a time bomb waiting to go off.
People living near The Stork pub, in Marsh Green claim youngsters climb on the roof, crawl inside and have even set it on fire.
Since it closed, the Kitt Green Road pub has lain derelict and although boarded up for two years it has been the target of vandals and gangs hanging around causing a nuisance. The shutters were removed last weekbut residents say it is littered with jagged pieces of glass, smashed windows and rotten wood. They want it knocked down because they say it is an accident waiting to happen.
Maureen Bradbury, who lives opposite the pub said, "It's so dangerous because it's completely open. Children used to climb in but they can now just wander in and out through any of the doors and windows. There's jagged pieces of glass, broken and rotten wood- I'm dreading the day a child has a terrible accident. There are more than 60 kids on this estate and with half term approaching they'll all be at it. Many parents are stressed out. I've lived here for 34 years and while it was a pub it was no problem, but since it's been derelict it's been a living nightmare.
"There were plans for it to be transformed into a family pub with a big garden, but that never got off the ground. It should be knocked down."
Back in August 1998 Solihull-based Enterprise Inns confirmed a bid had been accepted from a company wishing to buy the pub but there have been no developments since.
Wigan Metro confirmed that they are taking urgent action to get the pub boarded up again and will be going to court to take legal action against the company.

"FIRE RISK" CAR CLOSES GALLERIES CAR PARK

Trading standards chiefs are investigating an incident in which a car turned into a potential death trap after repair work at a Wigan garage.
Bernard Mullaney, of Whitecroft Road, says his daughter Tina is lucky to be alive after a massive fuel leak while her engine was still running. The 20 year-old was in the Galleries car park in Wigan when her H-reg Ford Sierra started gushing pools of petrol just days after having a carburettor replaced. A passer by noticed fuel leaking from the car and shouted, "Turn off your engine - that's petrol."
Car park officials were forced to close the area for an hour because of the risk of fire. A spokesman said, "There was so much petrol running from the car that the safest thing to do was close the place down. Petrol is a safety hazard and it could have sparked or set on fire."
Tina called out vehicle rescue service Green Flag to help her move the car and, according to Mr Mullaney, the mechanic was shocked at what he saw. He said, "The Green Flag mechanic couldn't believe the state of the work that had been carried out on the car. He said the effects could have been devastating. He said the car needed a new carburettor and he fitted a second-hand one the day after. In total the work cost me 85 pounds. But after Tina's incident I am very concerned about the kind of work this guy is doing."
Wigan Council's chief trading standards officer, Alan Blundell, said they are currently looking into the situation and will be advising Mr Mullaney on what action to take.
The garage concerned, Wigan-based SR Autos, refused to comment on the incident.

SMARTER SECURITY FOR "TOWERS"

A crime-hit area of Wigan could be in for a massive security boost. Metro chiefs are bidding for cash to pay for improved spy cameras equipment in and around the seven tower blocks in Scholes.
The cameras would also be installed to overlook car parks and the local shopping precinct in a project the total cost of which could exceed 5,000 pounds.
Scholes suffers from a higher than average amount of vandalism and car crime than other areas of Wigan, often carried out by people spilling out of nightclubs late at night.
A concierge service already exists in all the blocks of flats and there are CCTV cameras covering the entrances and garage bays. But technology has advanced rapidly in the eight years since the cameras were installed around Douglas, Woodcock and Brook Houses, and the council says it is time the equipment was replaced.
The housing department wants to expand the system so that it keeps a watchful eye over no fewer than 1,500 properties in the lower Scholes area. If it gets the money, it would want to link up the whole new network to the Metro's Central Watch station in the town centre which monitors other street CCTV zones in the borough.
The Home Office has already given outline approval to the bid, along with applications to install cameras in Tyldesley and Hindley town centres. Detailed plans must now be drawn up and submitted to Jack Straw by November 22nd after which the Home Secretary will make his funding decision.
Director of housing Peter Gee said: " Should we secure the money, this would be an extremely valuable security project for the Scholes area which we would hope to replicate in other parts of the borough in the future."
The Home Office is indicating that full approvals will be announced before Christmas and that there will be further CCTV grant bidding rounds in the new year.
