Dave Willis Tourney
Faith, Hope & Charity
Faith, Hope & Charity are the three greatest gifts, but the greatest of these is Charity. The Paintball community of Southwest Virginia and North East Tennessee all rallied to support the family of David Willis a Corrections Officer at Keen Mountain Correctional Center in Oakwood Virginia on March 22, 2003 At Cross Creek Paintball in Honaker Virginia. David died while working in the early morning hours in January of this year.
It was a Great day for paintball; the weather was delightful teams gathered on time and was ready to play paintball. Each team had had an opportunity the walk and some had played the field prier to the tournament. This was one of the best atmospheres I have ever been involved in with paintball. Refs were very knowledgeable and trained of paintball from years of playing and certifications form PTI's ref school.
The team Captains meeting was held at 10 am sharp and rules were discussed, questions clarified and schedules set for the day. Shawn McRenyolds of Smackz.com acted as the Ultimate Ref, Willis Rowe Tourney director and ref, Major Dale Van ref, Mike Brown ref, Mike Vandyke ref and Terry Sanders coordinated the fill stations and ref.
The field consisted of 16 teams who would face each other through out the day. Brackets were set up and managed by volunteers who really did an outstanding job of keeping teams on deck and ready to roll. The Tourney started like expected with a blast and quick flag grabs, which would prove to be some of the most critical points earned through out the days games. Some teams had been playing together for a while and others were made up only a few days before the tourney.
I have never witnessed such sportsmanship and character among paintball players. That's why I love this game so much. There were only a few instances where ref's really had to call players out. That was due to the hit not being felt by the player. Some calls were hard to make, but were consistent all day long acting in the color of fair play and sportsmanship.
Teams played very hard all through the day. Each game presented different obstacles for the teams. Often times upfront players would reach the flag station at the same time and end up taking some heavy fire and getting pinned down with only the center field bunker between them. One very memorable game caught Shawn, the Ultimate Ref rushing in to pull a players armband as a player from Team Dominators made an aggressive bunkering move. Shawn took a nasty hit to the right side of the neck. Hey that's refereeing paintball.
Garbing the flag didn't mean you would keep it. Sometimes the flag grab would go to one team and then that team getting all shot out and the opposing team hanging the flag.
Upon hanging the flag chrono's was taken of two random players from each team. There were a few penalty points for hot guns, but were managed by team captains later in the day. The highest points penalty was 49 points for hot markers on a young team.
As the day progress the finals held team Picnic, Point Blank, Team Dominators, Dye-Versity & Team Wicked. It was crunch time for everyone and I mean wow was it ever very exciting play. Teams faced each other with amazing zeal, swift speed and heavy firepower. There were no mistakes at this level of play, everyone played smart and stuck to their game plan.
The deciding and final game of the day came down to Team Picnic and Point Blank. The winner of this event point wise would walk away the winner. Brothers Brandon & Kenny Hill demonstrated aggressive paintball play. Time ended during a very aggressively played game and the points revealed that Team Picnic still came out the Tourney Champion.
There was no arguing over the calls all day and all teams agreed on the decision of the Ref's and the Tourney ended with a blast. Raffles were held and everything from Tanning sessions and video rentals to paintball jerseys and tee shirts were given out. The ultimate sportsmanship award went to a player who took a serious bunker shot to the head and neck area and left the field without complaint or concern. Teams received many items from sponsors across Southwest Virginia & National Paintball Supply.
In conclusion, all teams were in agreement that the Dave Willis Memorable Paintball Tournament was without doubt the best-organized event that any had ever participated in. Thanks to the spirit of Charity within the paintball community of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, you guys are the greatest.
