The Melbourne Storm rugby league club was started in 1998, when Melbourne played their first match in the National Rugby League (NRL). The team finished 3rd in its first year, a great effort. The next year, 1999, the Stormers won the premiership despite trailing 13-0 at half time against Saint George-Illawarra. Brett Kimmorley was judged best afield. 2000 was a disappointing year for the Storm, mainly because of injuries, finishing 7th after bombing out in the first week of the finals. The Storm have many players representing their countries in the 2000 World Cup. Brett Kimmorley, Scott Hill and Robbie Kearns are representing Australia, Fifita Moala is representing Tonga, Tasesa Lavea, Richard Swain, Steve Kearney and Matt Rua are representing New Zealand, Marcus Bai is representing Papua New Guinea and Danny Williams is representing Ireland. Rodney Howe, Robbie Ross and Aaron Moule would have been considered but could not play because of injury. Also, coach Chris Anderson is the coach of Australia, who are favourites not just to win the cup, but to go through undefeated. The Melbourne Storm have just released their new away jersey, as well as a new home ground, Colonial Stadium. The Melbourne Storm Open Day was last Sunday and most players were in attendance.
