Burnley Are Up!!!!!!!!!

Scunthorpe United gave promotion-chasing Burnley a tough time at Glanford Park before the Lancashire side snatched a second half winner which sent them back to Division One.

Burnley made a bright start and should have opened their account inside two minutes. Andy Cooke fired in a cross from the left, but top-scorer Andy Payton headed over the bar.

Scunthorpe struck back immediately, and Steve Torpey saw a long-range shot drift wide of the mark and as play switched, Mitchell Thomas flashed a header over the bar.

With their destiny already settled, Scunthorpe played with greater freedom and it took a fine block by Steve Davis to halt the powerful Brian Quailey in his tracks.

Scunthorpe shook The Clarets, snatching a 21st-minute lead when midfielder Lee Hodges struck a tremendous right-foot shot from 22 yards that cannoned off the bar to beat Paul Crichton.

Hodges was almost on the mark again shortly afterwards when another long-range effort dipped over the bar.

Trouble loomed for Burnley when Crichton dashed some 30 yards out of goal, but Scunthorpe were unable to press home any advantage.

Strong appeals for a 27th-minute penalty were made by Payton when he went down under a challenge from Nathan Stanton, but referee Alan Butler ignored the pleas.

Burnley got themselves back into the game in the 41st minute when Paul Cook's right-wing corner was collected by Micky Mellon on the edge of the box and he drove home through a crowd of players.

Scunthorpe continued to play well as the second period opened with skipper Chris Hope rifling a shot wide and Graham Branch halted Quailey in full flight.

As Burnley came back again, Andy Cook lifted a shot over the top and Andy Dawson came in to block another attempt by Payton.

Dawson came into the action at the other end when he got in a fine cross from the left which Quailey was just unable to toe-poke home.

Young Scunthorpe star Paul Harsley then struck a fine left-foot shot straight at Crichton and Hope saw a right-foot shot dip over the bar.

Burnley stepped up the pressure, and in the 73rd minute substitute Glenn Little put them ahead when he fired home from 20 yards to beat Ross Turner, making his debut in Scunthorpe's goal.

Ronnie Jepson, who followed Burnley manager Stan Ternent from Bury commented: "Stan has come to the club and turned things round and it has been brilliant.

"Expectations at Burnley are high and full credit to him. It's been very professional.".
