Described by his coach, T.J. Kerr, as a "world class athlete", Marty Lockwood is not only one of the top athletes on the West Coast but he is also a "world class person". He will wrestle at 118-pounds this season. He owns a 34-17-1 career mark at Sparta with season records of 16-4 (1976), 13-9-1 (1977), and 5-4 (1978). Marty, nicknamed "Woodstock", came to SJSU from Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley, where he competed in wrestling under Coach Bill Clauder. He was league champ and CIF section runnerup while finishing 3rd in the California state meet. At SJSU he was unbeaten in 16 dual meets as a sophomore and was nationally 7th in the 1976 AAU Freestyle, 3rd in the 1976 Greco-Roman, 2nd in the 1977 USWF Greco-Roman. He was alternate to the Montreal Olympics for the US and the highlight to his career was in making the US Team to the Pan American Games in 1977 in Mexico City and claiming the gold medal for his country.
