Season Outlook 1976-77

"If we can learn the handshake by November and how to assume the referee's position by January, i think we'll be in good shape," joked coach Kerr when asked about the Spartans' 1976-77 season. "Actually we have a fine group of young freshmen athletes and some excellent transfers. If these new guys can hang in there and blend in with the returnees, we should mold into a solid unit by the end of the season."

The Spartans have ten solid varsity competitors returning this season. They are paced by senior Rudy Guevara, junior Marty Lockwood, and sophomore Randy Fleury. Sophomores Mike Snipes, Jim Rey, and Mike Applegate add strength to the middle.

"I'm looking forward to this season. The new freshmen look as tough as any we've brought in and they're hungry for action. They want to succeed. The transfers look better than what we've had in a long time," coach Kerr said.

The freshmen are led by Philip Williams, Jeff Fleury, Steve Mills (all State placers), Doug Johnson, and David Brouhard. Top transfer talent include Anthony Gutierrez, Jon Brenchly, Wes Burns, and David Hines.

The Spartans take on one of the toughest schedules in the history of wrestling at SJSU this year. In both tournament and dual meet action, the Spartans are taking on the best.

In dual meet engagements the Spartans knock heads against NCAA Division II champions Cal State Bakersfield, and host Division I schools UCLA, Cal, and University of Arizona in the Spartan Gym.

"There is no doubt that Bakersfield is going to be extremely tough and Cal did some fine recruiting. These four meets alone should give us some super competition," coach Kerr stated.

"I am sure," Kerr continued, "our competitors are really going to benefit from our tournament participation." That could be a real understatement. The Spartans meet Cal Poly and Arizona State University at the UCSB Invitational and Oregon State, University of Washington, University of Oregon, and the host school at the Portland State Invitational. The Spartans will also travel to the Great Plains Tournament and the prestigious Midlands Championship.

"With competition like this throughout the season i believe we'll be prepared for the PCAAs, Regionals, and the Big One...the NCAAs."
