Season Outlook 1978-79

The 1978-79 SJSU wrestling outlook is bright indeed and possibly the brightest ever in the 44-year history of the sport at Sparta.

Coach T.J. Kerr is looking forward to 1978-79 with hopes of improving on last year's 12-4-1 dual meet season record and second place finishes in the PCAA and the NCAA Western Rergionals.

To do that, Kerr will call upon a fine blend of experienced talent and freshly recruited talent. Half the roster includes returnees from last year and the remainder of the team is made of freshmen and JC transfers.

A trio of seniors lead the Spartans--Robert McDowell at 142 and 150-pounds, Dunae Harris at 190, and Marty Lockwood at 118. Any one of them could win the NCAA title this year at his respective weight as McDowell finished last year 40-3 and rated 2nd in the nation at one point while Harris was ranked 15th in March and owns a 63-51-1 career mark. Lockwood is 34-17-1 and won a gold medal in the 1977 Pan American Games for the US.

The home schedule is tough with the likes of California, Ohio State, SIU-Edwardsville and SIU-Carbondale coming into "The Pit" along with Oregon State, Portland State, and Cal-State Bakersfield.

The road slate includes some other superior competition and most of the major championships.

Kerr feels that to be the best, you must wrestle the best. And that summarizes the 1978-79 outlook.
