Season Outlook 1983-84

With no returning All-Americans, the Spartan squad remains optimistic and enters the 1983-84 season with plenty of confidence. "Despite the lack of All-American products from last year, the team is loaded with returning talent," comments head coach T.J. Kerr.

After a 21-5 dual meet season, a new school record for most seasons wins, and their ninth PCAA championship, the Spartans are geared for an explosive season. Priming the pump for the Spartans will be several returning PCAA champions. Among these, David Barnes (142) enthusiastically enters the new season after an intense off-season training program, culminating in a California State Freestyle Championship. Andy Tsarnas should hit the spotlight at 190-pounds and Jay Slivkoff will provide the powerhouse at 150-pounds. Additionally, Albert Perez (126) will returning, setting his sights on another PCAA championship as well as All-American status. "The team looks real strong with four of five PCAA champions of last year returning," stated Coach Kerr.

Joining these wrestlers will be a truckload of additional returning talent, including Brian Canali who has been anxiously awaiting his chance to take a swing at a PCAA championship at 118-pounds. Over the summer, Brian displayed his talents by nabbing a 2nd place finish in Greco-Roman competition at the prestigious National Sports Festival in Colorado. Darryl Pope, coming back for his second season as a Spartan, will provide young talent to the squad. "Darryl is definitely one of our hardest workers and has been getting ready for the season," says Coach Kerr. Also, young Mike Monroe will fill the heavyweight slot this year as a sophomore. "I've been impressed with his off-season training. He should steadily improve over the season as he gains mat experience."

Add to this list of dedicated wrestlers like Tim Porter (126), Dave Ciprian (118), Pat Huyck (167), Chris Atkinson (177), and Eric Middlestead (190) and it's easy to imagine another powerhouse squad for the 1983-84 season.

As usual, the Spartans are always primed for tough competition, and this season's schedule is chock full of quality opponents. Rivals like Cal-Poly SLO, Cal-State Bakersfield, Oregon and Oregon State, will be traditionally keeping their eyes on San Jose State, ready to hammer a nail through its solid team.

In addition, T.J. Kerr has beefed up the schedule with some heavily loaded road trips, including one that requires the Spartans to compete in eight dual meets in seven days. "I want to make life a little rough on them, " says Kerr. "I want to make sure they stay tough and competitive throughout the season, in order to keep them ready for the NCAAs."

High goal setting has been a trademark of San Jose State Wrestling. As Coach Kerr has said, "Spartan wrestlers may not win all the time, but they're sure to provide aggressive all-out wrestling to whomever they head up against."
