(From 1983-84 Season...)
With a 1982-83 season that saw many successes, including a new SJSU dual meet-win record, T.J. (Terrence John) Kerr enthusiastically enters his twelfth season as head coach.

With tireless energy, Coach Kerr continues to lead his pack of wrestlers through his year-round training program dedicated to making his team one of the best in the nation consistently.

As if it were tradition, Coach Kerr again directed his squad to another PCAA Championship last year, bringing the total to nine in eleven years. Along with this, Kerr has seized his sixth PCAA Coach Of The Year award.

On the national mat scene, T.J. has tallied four Top-25 finishes in the NCAA's including 22nd in 1973, 23rd in 1974, another 23rd in 1981...and an outstanding 9th in 1982. Additionally, he has had 34 individuals qualifying for the NCAA's, and six of these have hooked All-American titles under his guidance.

His coaching success has not been limited to collegiate wrestling as he has tutored many of his wrestlers to national freestyle and Greco-Roman competition including Olympic alternate Marty Lockwood, Pan-Am Games Silver medalist Dan Kida, and International Greco-Roman medalist Brian Canali.

T.J. began wrestling at San Jose's Del Mar High School where he was team captain. He came to SJSU where he competed under Hugh Mumby (1967-69, 70-71) and Olympic gold medalist Bill Smith (1969-70). He earned his bachelor of science degree from San Jose State University in 1972.

T.J.'s brother Tim is Dean of Students at Bellarmine High School and was assistant coach for the Spartans from 1973-78.

Continuing his limitless success, T.J. Kerr was appointed the California U.S.A. Wrestling State Open Director in 1983 and was awarded a spot on the National Wrestling Coaches Association Executive Committee last year.

Aside from wrestling, Kerr places high emphasis on maintaining academic standards for his wrestlers and believes in a closely knit team with good personal qualities in order to acheive the best possible performance from the Spartan squad.

Off the mat, Coach Kerr has been shaping the course for permanent self-sufficiency for the Spartan Wrestling program. He is well on his way, being the top fundraiser for the Spartan Foundation in 1983.

The realization of this goal should become evident, as T.J. Kerr continues to vigorously march upon this obstacle with plenty of hard work and determination.
