Game 1
8\16\03
Gobbler Stadium
Well it's on now! Finally the football season has begun. The Gobblers hosted the Fightin' Leopards from La Grange in a friendly scrimmage. The weather was nice but humid.
La Grange seemed to have speed, but to no avail, the Gobblers matched up very well.
The Gobbler defense kept the Leopard offense on the run through out the entire scrimmage. Their highly picked QB did not get enough time in the pocket or on roll-outs to pick apart the Gobbler 'D'. The defenseive line stopped the Leopards with losses or minimal gains. It was hard to tell which player was who 'cause Coach Reeve had the Gobblers in their work clothes....After one hour the Leopards called it quits and the scrimmage was over. The Gobblers threw a pass over the center and dodged several tackles, making it into the end zone. WHAT!!! The refs called it back saying his knee touched (I didn't see that). Before the series was over that Gobbler offense scored one with the elusive recieving core from about 70 yds. They called it 1-0 but I say 2-0.
Great job Gobblers! The Refugio Bobcats are next.....come support.
The J-V ended up dead even at 0-0.
The Freshmen took control on the game field 3-0. The Leopards felt they didn't get enough so they went out on the practice field to finish. They had enough when the Gobblers put one more in the end zone. Final 4-0.

Cuero Record
Gobblers shine in first scrimmage
Cuero’s Gobblers managed a shut-out of the La Grange Leopards Saturday in their first scrimmage of the new season.
The Freshmen went 4-0 against the Leopards and the JV battled with neither team earning a touchdown.
Cuero’s Varsity managed two touchdowns against the state-ranked visitors although one was called back because the officials thought the Gobbler receiver’s knee had touch the ground.
Giving fans their first look at the team, Head Coach Mark Reeve noted, “We played hard and that’s the main thing.”
Each team was limited to 10 plays on offense in the scrimmage and Cuero’s Matt Schumacher caught Nick Taylor on the run with a long pass that connected for touchdown for the only score by either team.
“It was a typical first scrimmage,” Coach Reeve said, “we had a couple of turnovers on offense which we have to cut out.”
“We have to do a better job on just techniques,” he said, “but we moved the ball real well.”
“I thought the kids did a good job with the tempo, speed of the game,” he added.
Refugio will be Cuero’s next scrimmage. Playing at Gobbler Stadium, the varsities will play at 7 p.m. and the JV’s will play at 6. Because Refugio could not schedule a freshman game, Cuero’s Freshmen will host a Gonzales team at 5 p.m.
Refugio’s Bobcats are picked to win District 21-2A returning 12 starters from a regional finalist team from last year. They were 4-1 in district play. The team has three all-district players returning.
