Game 2
8\22\03
Gobbler Stadium
Hot, thick and humid, but that is scrimmage type weather. It's the same all over Texas
this time of year. The Gobblers hosted the Refugio Bobcats in Cuero. The Bobcats also have a new Coach and like the Gobblers are working out some bugs. The Gobblers were able to use Reeve Pest Control to wipe out the bugs in Gobbler Stadium tonight. Refugio's first play netted them 5 yards, but that was all! The Gobbler defense was just too stingy. I don't have the stats, so sue me.....in 10 plays they did not get a first down with the first team in. The Gobblers were able to move the ball down field in their 10 plays but did not get in the end zone. From then on the scrimmage belonged to our Green team. The Bobcat defense played hard against our huge
O-Line, but just couldn't hold teh Gobblers back. The running game looked great when they settled down after the first series. The passing was very good especially when Refugio stacked the line. Cuero scored 4 times in the first part of the scrimmage.
In the controled part, Refugio punted twice and the Gobblers scored twice. After the last score the Bobcats had had enough. I think they had only two or three first downs all night. The Gobbler Defense played very well. The Offense is starting to sharpen their sword. A little more grinding on the 'ol hone and look out ya might get cut.
Gobblers 6, Bobcats 0.
We host the Gregory-Portland Wildcats (whats up with all thesecat teams?) Class 4-A
play off contenders from last year. This will be a big scrimmage for the young Gobblers. The Gobblers of old knocked the Wildcats out of the play-offs a few times.
Come early and root for your Gobblers.
"Go Mean Green"
J-V 0, Bobcats 1
Freshmen 2, vs Gonzales (10,11&12) 3
We will play again!!

Cuero Record
Gobblers preparing for final scrimmage
Cuero’s Gobblers were again successful in their scrimmage Friday. The Varsity and JV scrimmage Refugio here while the Freshmen scrimmaged Gonzales.
All three teams will see their final scrimmage Thursday when they play host to Gregory Portland. The Freshmen start at 5 p.m. followed by JV at 6 and Varsity at 7:30.
Looking at last week’s scrimmages, the Freshmen had two teams scrimmaging the Gonzales Apaches. The first team collected two scores while holding Gonzales scoreless. The second team of Freshmen lost their scrimmage as Gonzales scored three times and held Cuero scoreless.
The Gobbler JV and Refugio JV played a scoreless scrimmage until the final play of the contest when Refugio scored giving the visitors a 1-0 win.
In the Varsity contest, Cuero managed four touchdowns while keeping Refugio out of the endzone.
All of the Gobbler receivers and running-backs caught a pass in the game which featured Matt Schumacher at quarterback. Cuero had no turnovers in the scrimmage.
The Cuero defense refused to allow Refugio to cross the 50-yard line during the contest.
Zach Gomez had a 65 yard run for a score with Brad Kuecker kicking the point-after.
Dewonne Williams scored on a 40-yard run for the second TD and Kuecker was good on the PAT.
Other scores came on passes from Schumacher to Jeremy Ross, Gomez, Casey Harryman and Latreal Cooper.
Looking at the final scrimmage, Coach Mark Reeve said the Gobblers are looking better. “We’re getting there but we’ve got to get better,” he said. “We’ve got to pick up the intensity in practice but we are getting better everyday.”
Gregory Portland is a 4A school and will rely on one of the area’s top running-backs. Junior Connell Davis rushed for 1,156 yards on 181 carries and 16 TDs for the Division II semi-finalist last season.
The Wildcats graduated 32 seniors, 16 starters, from their 7-0 district champion team but are still picked to make the playoffs again this season.
