Game 3
8\28\03
Gobbler Stadium
How do I start this report? Hummm, well the Gobblers shut down the Wildcat's
high powered offense and moved the ball on their defense. Heck, that's kinda what happened..... With the history of Cuero vs. Gregory-Portland I felt this to be a big challange for the Gobblers. History remained unchanged and the Wildcats are still
having some difficulty unlocking the Gobbler's winning hold over them. There were
many players from the '70's at the game hoping this young Gobbler team would keep
the Wildcats underwraps. The Gobbler defense did not allow much ground attack and the air game was in disarray from the constant pressure applied. The Gobbler offense
moved the ball pretty well in their first 10 plays. The Wildcats looked like they were just at practice, but the Gobblers came at them full force. How does that saying go?? "practice like your gonna play?" I know Coach Reeve can find many things to improve on, but I feel the young guns had a great scrimmage tonight. The small Wildcat crowd
was stunned that their 4-A school could not get any offense going against this 3-A team. Oh well, The Gobblers were able to rack-up three scores to none.
In the quarter under game situation the Wildcats had one big play and moved the ball deep into Gobbler territory. They made it inside the 5 and then the defense rose to the occasion. They held them out of the end zone three straight plays. The Wildcats tried a field goal but was wide right. Neither team scored in the game situation.
Final Gobblers 3; Wildcats 0.
We are at home again this week. Lets beat the Raiders!!
"come early"
"stay late"

Gobblers to open ‘03 season against Rice
9\2\03
Cuero Record
Cuero Gobbler’s coaches have to be pretty happy with their team’s performances in three scrimmages. The Gobblers hosted three different size schools and all pegged to win their district races. In each scrimmage Cuero outscored the visitors.
Thursday the Gobblers saw some game-like conditions with Gregory-Portland. When the scrimmage ended, Cuero had scored three times and held the visitors scoreless.
There was also a good goal-line stance and for the second week, the Gobblers had no turn-overs. In earlier scrimmages the Freshmen Gobblers won 5-2 and the JV won 3-0.
“We’ve gotten better with every scrimmage,” said Head Coach Mark Reeve, “and that’s the key - to get better.”
This week the Gobblers are preparing for their first game. It will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Gobbler Stadium against the Rice Consolidated Raiders.
Rice beat East Bernard 55-6 last week to mark the start of their season.
“Our scrimmages haven’t been as long as we would want but our guys are ready,” stated Coach Reeve.
He noted Rice has 30 returning lettermen from an area finalist team last year. They have nine offensive and nine defensive starters returning.
“They don’t have a lot of question marks,” Coach Reeve noted. “They’ve got a good football team with four or five guys that can tote the mail. It will be the most talented team we’ve played and they’ve got a lot of depth.”
But Coach Reeve the Gobblers are going into the game with a winning attitude.
“We have three or four running-backs that have played pretty well,” he said. “We’ve got some back that you shouldn’t be able to tackle with one guy.”
Against Gregory-Portland Russell Goebel and Matt Schumacher took turns calling the plays over center.
The first score came a drive that included receptions by Casey Harryman, Dakota Williams, and Nick Taylor. Latrael Cooper also moved the ball up the middle on the ground. Goebel hit Brady Urbanovsky on the run for the first touchdown and Brandon Kuecker’s kick was good for the point-after.
The Gobbler defense gave G-P all it could handle and recorded two fumble recoveries.
Cuero’s second score came on a pass to Jeremy Ross up the left side aided by a key block by Martell Williams.
The final score came on a 40 yard run by Dewone Williams down the right side.Cuero Gobbler’s coaches have to be pretty happy with their team’s performances in three scrimmages.
