Game 6
GOBBLERS DOMINATE THE TIGERS
9\19\03
Gobbler Stadium
With 1 loss and 1 victory under their belts, the Gobblers were ready to make it two in a row. The house was full when the Gobblers hit the grass. The Tigers won the toss and were introduced to the Gobbler defense a bit sooner than they would have liked. I liked it verrrry well. Zach opened up the scoring, one of four on the night, with a 28 yd pass from Matt. The Gobblers held the lead for the first quarter7-0. Sealy had a drive of 80 yds to tie the score in the second quarter. Nick picked off a pass but it was called back. Jeremy Ross picked off one a couple of playes later. Zach took it 25 yds for his second score. The extra point was blocked. Sealy scored late in the half but Brady blocked the extra point, keeping the score tied at the half 13-13.
The Gobblers fumbled the first play of the second half and the Tigers picked it up and run it in from 25 yds. That would be the first and last time Sealy would see the lead.
Zach blocked a punt and Justin Robinson recovered it in the end zone. Extra point was good and the scored tied again. Justin recovered a Tiger fumble and the offense took it down to the 26 yd line where Kuecker kicked the field goal making it 23-20.
Zach blocked his second punt, then scored his third from 1 yd out. The Gobbler defense did not let the Tigers out of their grasps which forced another intercecption by Zach. That set up his forth score from 54 yds. late in the game the defense forced the Tigers to give up the ball on downs. Latrell scored from 1 yd out. The Gobbler offense had a great game balancing between the run and pass. The defense was awesome.
Great job Gobblers. Travel time this week. Looking forward to the trip down to Sinton to sink another Pirate ship!!

Gobblers declaw Sealy Tigers
with lopsided 44-20 contest
by Glenn Rea
Record Editor - What stigma? The fact that Cuero has a 1-9 record with Sealy’s Tigers, has little meaning to this year’s Gobblers.
In their third game of the season, Cuero thoroughly dominated the visiting Tigers posting a final score of 44-20.
For most of the first half, the Gobblers played their game in Tiger territory.
A synopsis of the scoring looks like this: The Gobblers scored on their first and third possessions. Two of Sealy’s scores were a result of turnovers and another was a result of penalty. In the second half Cuero outscored Sealy 31-7.
With Matt Schumacher calling the signals, Cuero launched its first drive from the Tiger 43. The Gobblers introduced running back Matt Gomez to the visitors early. Gomez collected 10 yards on the ground and 21 in the air to claim the first score of the night. Assisting in the drive was a reception by Nick Taylor good for 12 yards. With Brandon Kuecker’s PAT kick, Cuero was on top 7-0 with 7:41 left in the first quarter.
Determined play by Cuero’s defensive secondary including Taylor, Gomez and Larvell Roy, Sealy spent much of their time running the ground game. But that meant they had to deal with Aaron Saenz, Justin Robinson, Matt Rauch, Dakota Williams and Brady Urbanovsky.
Cuero kept the visitors deep in their own territory until the middle of the second quarter. Facing a third and seven at the Tiger 33, Taylor picked off a Sealy pass but the referee’s flag called the play back on a roughing the passer call.
With new life the Tigers were able to keep their drive alive. A 26-yard pass over the heads of the Gobblers resulted in a quick seven points for Sealy with 7:19 left in the first half.
Cuero battled to the Tiger 40 on their next possession before facing a 4th-and-3 punt.
From their own 34, Sealy ran into Ben Mejia, Urbanovsky and Robinson. On a 3rd-and-6 pass attempt, Cuero’s Jeremy Ross stepped in front of the receiver to give the Gobblers the ball at the Tiger 45.
Schumacher sent Latrael Cooper deep on the right side with a pass reception to move the Gobblers to the Tiger 20. Gomez took the hand-off and out-ran three Tigers down the left side for Cuero’s second touchdown of the night. The point-after kick attempt was blocked and the score was 13-all.
Sealy’s next touchdown resulted from a Gobbler turnover. After holding the Tigers to only seven yards on their next drive, Sealy was forced to punt. But Cuero bobbled the catch which was covered by Sealy at the Gobbler 10.
The Tigers called for a reverse and found the left side of the field open. Their quick six points was all Cuero would allow as Urbanovsky blasted through to block the extra-point attempt.
As time ran out the score was 13-13.
The second half opened with almost the identical play. Cuero took a Tiger kick-off and fumbled the first play from scrimmage. The Tigers scooped up the loose luggage and scrambled in for an unlikely seven points. With just 15 seconds off the clock, Sealy was up 20-13.
Gobbler coaches urged their players to “shake it off.” They did.
Sealy’s next drive started at their own 28. Rauch and Robinson refused any gains, even knocking down a Tiger pass. Forcing a Sealy punt from the 32, Gomez raced into the backfield and blocked the kick. The ball rolled into the Tiger end zone where it was recovered by Robinson for a Gobbler touchdown. Kuecker added the extra point and the game was tied at 20.
A dazed Sealy squad attempted to regain their composure after the kick-off but Ross, Dewonne Williams, Saenz, Gomez, Robinson and Josh Guajardo were on a mission.
Facing a 3rd-and-22 from their own 32, Sealy coughed up the ball and Robinson was there for his second fumble recovery of the night.
Cuero took advantage of the turnover moving to the ball 20 yards closer to the Tiger end zone and calling on Kuecker to kick a 26-yard field goal. With less than two minutes left in the third quarter, Cuero was on top 23-20.
Cuero dominated the remainder of the game.
The Tigers lost ground on their next possession thanks to the Gobbler defense and a sack by Robinson at the Sealy 13. Again Gomez found a clear shot at the punter and blocked the punt attempt.
The ball was downed at the Tiger five. Gomez needed only two carries to move the ball over the goal-line for seven points. Kuecker’s kick made it 30-20 shortly after the start of the fourth period.
The Tigers tried to show their talent on the next series but Gomez stopped a run-away Sealy back at mid-field. He then grabbed a Tiger pass for an interception at the Gobbler 15.
Ross was able to get the Gobblers out of trouble with a dash down the right side good for 15 yards. But again it was Gomez that broke through outrunning the Tiger defenders for 54-yards and another Gobbler score. With Kuecker’s kick, the score was 37-20.
Courtney Williams, Michael Haynes, Martell Williams, Dakota Williams and Saenz kept the Tigers frustrated on their next possession giving Cuero the ball at the Tiger 26.
With Russell Goebel calling the plays, the Gobblers relied on Copper to get to the Tiger three with a first down. Goebel handed off to Cooper two more times and the Gobblers scored their final touchdown of the night. With Kuecker’s PAT, the final score was 44-20.
Gobblers get rare win over Tigers
Sealy News.com
For only the second time in 10 tries and the first time at Gobbler Stadium, the Cuero Gobblers defeated Sealy 44-20 Friday.
"I'm not going to take anything away from Cuero," said Sealy coach Mark Faldyn. "They played much better on Friday than they have been playing. We played poorly. Every phase of our game was down."
Despite giving up more than 110 yards on kickoff and punt returns in the first half and letting Cuero start four of five possessions in Sealy territory (the fifth started at the Cuero 46), Sealy managed a 13-13 tie at halftime.
The Tigers took a 20-13 lead when Sealy defensive end Andy Krampitz caught a fumble in the air on Cuero's first play from scrimmage in the second half and returned it 23 yards for a score.
After that touchdown, the wheels came off the Sealy wagon and Cuero ran off 31 unanswered points for the win. Only the final gun stopped the Gobbler attack.
"We'll have to see how our guys recover from this loss," continued Faldyn. "Every setback is an opportunity to build character, and we need to see how our guys pick themselves up, dust off, and get back to playing Sealy football."
After Sealy's first possession a long punt return set Cuero up at the Tiger 43-yard line, it only took Cuero five plays to score. Zach Gomez covered the final 28 yards on a swing pass from quarterback Matt Schumacher to score untouched around the left side.
Schumacher would complete 10 of 11 passes for 172 yards on the night, and only one pass play was completed past the line of scrimmage.
After another long punt return, Cuero started their next possession at the Sealy 42. A big stop on fourth and two stopped the drive and Sealy took possession at their own 20-yard line. A twelve play Sealy scoring drive culminated in a pretty pass play for a touchdown from Matt Zapalac to Bubba Stastny for a 26-yard score. Holder, Brad Norris, once again picked up a low snap and Alex Acosta put it through the uprights to tie the score.
Cuero would retake the lead following an interception that gave them another short field at the Sealy 44-yard line. This time Gomez scored from 25 yards out with 2:48 left in the half, but the kick was blocked by Sealy.
Sealy got their only special teams play off the night as Cuero fumbled the next punt and Matt Rodgers recovered for Sealy at the five-yard line. Johnathon Keener took it in on first down, but a blocked kick left the teams tied at halftime 13-13.
The only Sealy highlight of the second half was the touchdown by Krampitz on the first play.
Sealy went three and out on their first possession and a blocked punt was recovered by Cuero's Justin Robinson in the end zone to tie the game.
Sealy fumbled on the next possession. Cuero took over at the Sealy 27 but only managed a 26-yard field goal.
Sealy had a punt blocked on their next possession and Cuero recovered at the five-yard line. Gomez scored again.
Sealy was intercepted on the next possession. Gomez scored again, this time on a 55-yard run up the middle to make the score 37-20.
Sealy turned the ball over on downs at their own 27 and on third down Latrell Cooper scored the final Gobbler touchdown with2: 33 remaining.
Michael Andrews was the defensive player of the week with six solo tackles, one tackle for a loss, and three assists.
Gobblers get revenge on Tigers, 44-20
After 9 losses to Sealy in 10 games, Cuero was 'going to change things'

CUERO - Cuero coach Mark Reeve used Thursday's goal-setting session to inform his team of a comment made during the week to offensive coordinator Richard Miller.
"Some fans told coach Miller if we can't beat Sealy, we should just quit scheduling them," Reeve said. "That's what this game means to this community. I told our team we were going to have to quit playing them unless we beat (them)."
Cuero took the message to heart, scoring 31 consecutive second-half points to run off with a 44-20 win over the Tigers on Friday night at Gobbler Stadium.
With its second victory over Sealy in 10 games and its first at Gobbler Stadium, Cuero improved to 2-1, while dropping the Tigers to 3-1.
"I think we were always kind of in awe of Sealy," said senior running back Zach Gomez. "We decided we were going to change things. This is our house and we want to keep it like that."
Gomez did more than his part, rushing 14 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns, catching four passes for 48 yards and one touchdown, intercepting a pass and blocking two punts, one of which was recovered in the end zone by teammate Justin Robinson. "We were just determined," Robinson said. "We worked hard on this game. We sucked it up and played hard."
The Gobblers utilized every phase of their game to overcome two turnovers and a critical penalty that led to all of Sealy's points.
Cuero had good balance on offense, rushing for 172 and passing for 145 yards; the defense limited Sealy to 176 yards of offense and just 53 in the second half and the special teams blocked the two punts and an extra point.
"We've gotten so much better since the first game," Reeve said. "The key for us is just to believe we can win."
Cuero's faith was tested when Gomez fumbled on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Sealy's Andy Krempitz grabbed the ball and ran 25 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 20-13 lead. But the Gobblers set their comeback in motion after stopping Sealy at its 31-yard line on its next possession.
Gomez raced in from his outside position and blocked Justin Brantley's punt attempt. The ball bounded into the end zone where it was covered by Robinson for the touchdown.
"On the punt block," Gomez said, "I was just watching the ball and taking off as fast as I can."
Cuero's defense created the next scoring opportunity when Robinson recovered a fumble at the Sealy 27. It led to a 26-yard field goal by Brandon Kuecker, putting the Gobblers up 23-20 with 1:56 left in the third quarter.
The Gobblers took control after Gomez blocked his second punt, giving Cuero the ball at the Sealy 5. Gomez scored on a 1-yard run with 10:38 left in the fourth quarter.
"Great punters, and he (Brantley) is a great punter, typically get the ball off a little slower and we knew we could block one," Reeve said. "It was a big momentum changer for us. That's what special teams can do for us."
Gomez's interception set up his 54-yard touchdown run, and Latrael Cooper added to the final margin with a 1-yard touchdown run after Sealy was stopped on downs at its 27.
"I thought our linebackers Justin Robinson and Brady Urbanovsky did a great job," Reeve said. "Our defense is getting so much better."
Cuero took advantage of a 36-yard punt return by Nick Taylor to grab a 7-0 lead on its first possession. The touchdown came on a 21-yard pass from Matt Schumacher to Gomez.
Schumacher completed all seven of his passes in the first half, before finishing 10 for 11 for 145 yards.
Sealy tied the game on a 26-yard pass from Zapalac to Bubba Stastny to complete a 12-play, 80-yard drive that took 5:52 off the clock.
Cuero appeared to have stopped the Tigers when Taylor intercepted a pass. But the turnover was nullified by a penalty.
The Gobblers regained the lead after an interception by Jeremy Ross. Gomez raced 25 yards for the touchdown, but Sealy blocked the extra point.
The Tigers got a break when they recovered a fumbled punt by Taylor and scored on a 10-yard run by Jonathan Keener just 51 seconds before halftime. But the Cuero special teams kept the score tied by blocking the extra-point attempt.
"This time we showed something," Robinson said. "We showed we've got heart and we could come back and make a statement."

Gobblers brace for battle with Sealy
September 19, 2003

Mark Reeve witnessed something Cuero fans have rarely seen when the Gobblers play Sealy.
The first-year Cuero coach was reviewing the history of the rivalry and watched a tape of the 2000 game where Sealy was leading 21-20 and blocked an extra point attempt in overtime. But the ball bounced off the chest of a Sealy player, who was attempting to catch it in the end zone, and was recovered by a Cuero player for a two-point conversion in a 22-21 victory.
The odd play produced the Gobblers' only victory in nine tries against Sealy.
Cuero (1-1) will attempt to double its win total against the Tigers (3-0) when the teams meet today at 7:30 p.m. at Gobbler Stadium.
"I'm sure it's still a rivalry," Reeve said. "Our kids know them and they've talked about the running back (Emeal Andrus), who they've played against for four years. They know to get to that level, you have to beat the Sealy Tigers."
Cuero gave Reeve his first win at the school when it used a rushing attack that produced 307 yards in last week's 21-19 victory over Rockport-Fulton. Junior Matt Schumacher played the entire game at quarterback and threw only six passes, completing two for 11 yards. "They were taking the pass away so we kept running the football," Reeve said. "We're going to be a little more balanced. We may throw for 150 to 200 yards one week and 50 the next. It just depends. I thought we showed a mental toughness by being able to line up and run the football. That should help our attitude."
Sealy is coming off a 24-20 win over La Grange. Andrus, who was suspended one game, rushed 29 times for 158 yards to bring his season total to 320 yards.
"This game is a good measuring stick for both teams," said Sealy coach Mark Faldyn. "It's a very competitive game and you have big crowds. I've been here 19 years and this game reminds me of a playoff atmosphere."
Faldyn has been impressed by what Reeve has done in his short time at Cuero.
"I've noticed their quickness up front and their quickness in the backfield," Faldyn said. "They've become a big-play team. They're utilizing their talent so well." Reeve would say the same about Sealy, which has a 2-0 record at Gobbler Stadium.
"The thing about Sealy is it does such a great job on special teams," Reeve said. "Its punter (Justin Brantly) pinned Needville twice and the goal line and that led to two scores. Field position will be a big key in a ballgame like this."
NOTES: Sealy superintendent Dale Lechler and principal David Hill are no strangers to the area. Lechler was the head football coach at East Bernard and his son Shane punts for the Oakland Raiders. Hill played football at Cuero under Buster Gilbreth.
