Game 7
Gobblers Sink Another Pirate Ship
9\26\03
Pirate Stadium
During the drive down to Sinton I had a chance to reflect on the last couple of meetings between the Gobblers and the Pirates. That's all I could do `cause everyone was snoring during the trip. I was excited about this game (when am I not excited?), we arrived two hours early. As we drove up to the stadium, I saw the Pirate flags flying high and the paper cup signs all around the fence. The one that kept poking me in the ribs was the one that said “Grill The Gobblers”. I don't know why but that just grilled me the wrong way!
The rains earlier in the week had a buzz in the air tonight….awww shoot I was mistaken, the buzz in the air were mosquitos, good gosh they were thick. We were praying that the breeze would keep blowing but it didn't. Yelling, clapping and slapping was what you heard tonight. Coach Crow told me on Saturday that when they were just coming on the field and he heard the crowd yelling “go mean green”, he said “the hair was standing on the back of my neck!”
If you were not there you missed another great game. The Gobbler offense put together several great drives eating up the clock.Matt opened up the scoring with a five yard scamper and Justin Robinson added the two-point try. Zach had another good night running up an down the field, but unlike last week scoring four TD's, he did not get in the zone. Latrael and Dewone also had a great night. It was Latrael's night scoring three times. Kuecker was on the mark again hitting one field goal and all the PAT's. The Gobbler defense was just…ask the Pirates they'll tell you how aggressive they were. Coach Turberville's `Orange Men' done a fine job getting the Gobblers prepared for this game. The Young Gobbler offensive line is getting better each week helping the backs get good yardage. There were only two punts in the game one from each side. Great job Gobblers Final 32-6. The Gobblers are 3-1 so far, let's make it 4-1 next week!
The Gobblers are travling again this week over to Edna. Come early and get a seat, stay late and let's tailgate after the game. Be loud and drown out the Cowboy fans! Most of all wear green to show you love and support for the Gobblers!!
“go mean green!”
Gobblers sink Pirates with 32-6 win
by Glenn Rea
Record Editor - Once again Cuero’s Gobblers were able to take revenge for past woes. Traveling to Sinton to challenge the Pirates and mosquitoes, Cuero returned with a 32-6 win.
For the first quarter, anyone that wasn’t in the game was either spraying or getting sprayed with mosquito repellent just so they could see the plays through the pesky insects.
The Gobblers set the tone for the evening early. Zach Gomez took the opening kickoff and returned it to Cuero’s 43. Within three plays, the Gobblers were across the 50 but a fumble ended up in Pirate hands.
Seconds later facing a 1st-and-15 after a penalty, Sinton fumbled the ball back to Cuero which was recovered by Justin Robinson at mid-field.
Three straight charges by Gomez and the Gobblers were threatening at the Pirate 29. Josh Guajardo bullied his way for five up the middle. Gomez collected 15 more to get Cuero to the five. From there quarterback Matt Schumacher pulled off a good fake and ran left into the end zone for the game’s first score. He called on Robinson to add the two-point conversion and Cuero was up 8-0 with 3:37 left in the first quarter.
The Gobblers got the Pirates’ attention again on a short kick-off recovered by Cuero’s Martell Williams at the Sinton 47. This time it was running-back Dewonne Williams who was eating up yardage against the hosts. He moved the ball 15 yards on two runs and then Schumacher hit Guajardo with a short pass to get to the Sinton 3-yard-line.
From there Latrael Cooper completed the distance for the touchdown and Brandon Kuecker kicked the extra point to put Cuero up 15-0 with only seconds left in the opening period.
Sinton showed some of their talent on their next possession taking the kick-off at their own 36. After reaching the Gobbler 39, the drive slowed to a crawl with Robinson, Dakota Williams, Dewonne Williams, Ben Mejia, Gomez and Art Hunter in the way.
After reaching Cuero’s 15, Sinton was forced to go to the air but Dewonne Williams knocked down two of the passes and Dakota Williams added a sack forcing the Pirates to give the ball up on downs.
The Gobblers mounted a long drive as the first half was winding down that ended at the Pirate goal-line. What looked like a reception by Gobbler Brady Urbanovsky at the goal was ruled an interception for the Pirates.
In the second half Dewonne Williams spoiled the Pirates’ opening drive with an interception at the Gobbler 30. Cuero’s drive took an interesting twist as the Gobblers moved to the Pirate 45 and tossed an interception also. But as the Pirate was attempting to move the ball upfield, he fumbled and Cuero recovered to keep the drive alive.
Schumacher tossed a slant-pass to Nick Taylor good for about 40 yards to the Pirate five. Although the Sinton front stiffened, Cooper was able to cross the white-line for Cuero’s third touchdown of the night. Kuecker’s kick made it 22-0 with 6:36 left in the third period.
Gobbler Russell Goebel’s kick-off penned the Pirates at their own 16 with the help of a tackle by Cooper. Matt Rauch added a sack and Sinton was forced to punt after no gain on the possession.
Cuero started at their own 44 relying on Guajardo and Dewonne Williams for eight straight rushes to move the ball to the Sinton 11. A quick pass to Williams gained a couple of more yards but the Gobblers had to settle for a field goal off the toe of Kuecker. Just seconds into the fourth quarter, Cuero was up 25-0.
Although the Pirates connected on a 35 yard pass to get into Gobbler territory, Cuero stopped them at the 27 and the ball went to the Gobblers on downs.
Starting at their own 26, Cuero handed the ball to Gomez who started left and found no openings. He reversed field and blasted 43 yards to the Pirate 33.
Cooper showed some of his speed from the 29 outrunning the Pirates into the end zone for the Gobbler’s final score of the night. Kuecker added the extra point to make it 32-0 with seven minutes left in the game.
Sinton’s lone score came on their next possession. Taking advantage of a Gobbler face-mask penalty, the Pirates started their drive from mid-field. They needed only one play to get to Cuero’s 11.
Four plays later and they scored. A try for two points failed and the score was 32-6.
Goebel took over the QB duties for Cuero and kept possession of the mail for the remaining five minutes to end the game.
Cuero 15 0 7 10 - 32
