Game 9
Gobblers tame Tigers
in 56-6 district opener
by Glenn Rea
Record Editor - Cuero’s Gobblers were on center stage Friday performing in front of a standing-room-only crowd and the stars of the 1973 State Championship CHS team.
Opening district competition, Cuero caged the Goliad Tigers 56-6 and extended their win streak to five games.
With the coaches and players from the 1973 championship team serving as honorary captains of the game, the Gobblers wasted little time establishing dominance of the Tigers.
Quarterback Matt Schumacher went to the air on the first play of the game and hit wide-receiver Brandon Hilbrich for a 16-yard gain to midfield.
A penalty pushed Cuero back 10 yards but tailback Zach Gomez quickly made up the lost yardage getting to the Tiger 44. Jeremy Ross moved the ball to the 32. From there Schumacher hit Hilbrich again in the air and Cuero was knocking at the Tiger 23.
Sophomore Latrael Cooper took three quick hand-offs up the middle and the Gobblers scored their first touchdown of the night. The try for extra points failed and Cuero was up 6-0 with 7:14 remaining in the quarter.
The Gobblers were well schooled in Goliad’s offensive trickery and showed it on their first play from scrimmage. The Tigers attempted to snap the ball to their running-back but fumbled the mail which was quickly covered by Cuero’s Dakota Williams.
With new life at the Tiger 22, Gomez pounded the middle four times before crossing the line for a Cuero touchdown. Schumacher added the two-point conversion giving the Gobblers a 14-0 lead with five minutes left in the opening period.
Gobblers Matt Rauch, Brady Urbanovsky, and Josh Guajardo protected the middle of the field while Nick Taylor prevented the ‘hail Mary’ as the Tigers were forced to punt on their next possession.
Cuero started its third drive of the night from the Tiger 45. Taylor demonstrated his talent on first down with a 24-yard gain through the Tiger defense. Cooper banged out the remaining distance on four consecutive carries which included Cuero’s third score. Brandon Kuecker split the uprights to make it 21-0 with one minute before the start of the second quarter.
In spite of tough defensive plays by Gobblers Ben Mejia, Larvell Roy, Dakota Williams and Justin Robinson who allowed only three yards on Goliad’s next possession, Cuero turned the ball over after one play following the Tiger punt.
Forced to go to the air again, Goliad was refused any yardage by the Cuero defense. Roy dropped the Tigers after a one-yard reception and Martell Williams tipped the ball away on a long-bomb attempt.
With time running out in the second period, the Gobblers took a Tiger punt at the Goliad 46. Cooper slipped through several Goliad fingers on his way to the 13. Cuero called his number again and he completed the distance for a touchdown with five-minutes left in the first half. Kuecker added the PAT and the Gobblers were up 27-0.
Both teams exchanged punts as the clock moved toward halftime. Hilbrich put the Tigers against their own end zone with a kick to the Goliad five.
Robinson and Williams made sure the Tigers stayed inside their own 15 on three straight tries. Then it was Rauch and Urbanovsky that up-ended the Tiger punter giving Cuero the ball at the Goliad five.
With just 40 seconds left in the half, Gomez eased his way across the goal-line for a quick six points. Kuecker added the kick and the score was 34-0 to end the half.
After a short halftime rest, the Gobblers started where they left off to begin the third quarter. Nick Taylor, Roy, Robinson, Rauch, Guajardo and Gomez forced a Tiger punt which gave Cuero the ball at the Goliad 49.
Wide-receiver Martell Williams collected the hand-off from Schumacher on a well-executed reverse earning 46 yards to the Tiger three-yard line. From there Gomez got the call to cross over for the touchdown and Kuecker’s kick put Cuero on top 42-0 just two-and-a-half minutes into the second half.
The Tigers shot themselves in the foot again when they fumble the ball to Cuero’s Justin Robinson at the Goliad nine just seconds later.
Cooper only needed two hand-offs to cross over for another quick touchdown for Cuero. Again Kuecker added the extra point and the score was 48-0 with 8:30 remaining in the third period.
With the game winding down, Goliad mounted a scoring drive starting from the Gobbler 48. In spite of tough tackles by Robinson, Hilbrich, Levon Munoz, Ross and Ben Mejia, the Tigers were able to move the ball to Cuero’s eight-yard-line.
From there a pass over the middle found its mark in the Gobbler end zone to give Goliad its only points of the night. The try for two points was foiled when Ross intercepted the pass leaving the score at 49-6.
Cuero’s final points came in the last four minutes of the game when QB Russell Goebel called on Larvell Roy to carry the mail. Roy clicked off 95 yards untouched over left tackle to put the Gobblers up 56-6 including Kuecker’s boot.
