CUERO - Cuero didn't win the District 27-3A championship on Friday night at Gobbler Stadium, but its road to the title became considerably shorter.
The Gobblers executed their game plan to near perfection and rolled to a 31-7 victory over Hallettsville.
"I felt like we had to win tonight to win the district championship," said Cuero coach Mark Reeve. "We still need to win the next two weeks, but we had to win this game to have a chance."
The Gobblers not only won, they were dominant, while improving to 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in district. Cuero scored on five of its first six possessions and did not punt until just over five minutes remained in the fourth quarter.
"I knew from the atmosphere in the dressing room before the game that we were going to play a good game," Reeve said. "I didn't know that we were going to win. But I could tell that we were nervous and that was a good thing."
Cuero hardly appeared like a team with a case of the nerves. The Gobblers recorded 21 first downs, while rushing for 294 of their 378 total yards. Cuero running back Latrael Cooper carried 20 times for 191 yards, while Zach Gomez made the most of his 16 carries for 50 yards, scoring three times. Gomez also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Schumacher.
"I know he (Hallettsville coach Kyle Taylor) knew what we were going to do," Reeve said. "We knew that whoever was able to control the line of scrimmage and keep the clock moving would win. We were able to do that and that was the big key."
After settling for a 28-yard field goal by Brandon Kuecker on its first possession, Cuero scored on drives of 62 and 52 yards in the first half, and 70 and 40 yards in the third quarter.
"We came out so ready to play this game," Gomez said. "We were controlling the line of scrimmage and our speed helped out a lot. They were over-pursuing and we had a lot of success with cutbacks and backdoor stuff."
Gomez scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the first half and got his third touchdown on a 31-yard pass from Schumacher on a fourth-and-six play in the third quarter. He completed the scoring with a 4-yard third-quarter run. "I was just happy to be in there at the right time," Gomez said of his touchdowns and lack of yards in comparison to Cooper. "But we're both happy and that's the good thing."
Hallettsville, which dropped to 6-2 on the season and 2-1 in district, had very little to smile about on offense.
The Brahmas had only 137 total yards and their only score came on a 1-yard run by quarterback Garett Manning with 7:13 left in the second quarter.
"They can play six in the secondary and five in the box," Taylor said. "When they do that, you ought to be able to run. But they're so dad gum big and strong, that we couldn't do it. They're just good on both sides of the ball. We would have had to play a perfect game just to stay close."
Manning, the area's leading passer, completed seven of his 12 attempts for 67 yards, with 41 of those yards coming on a pass to Ahmad Rasheed.
Manning scored two plays later, but Hallettsville reached Cuero territory on only one more possession.
"The whole week of practice we worked hard on what they do," said Cuero linebacker Justin Robinson. "Coach Reeve is teaching us new things every day. We knew we had to play one down and one play at a time. The whole team was ready."
