Game 12
Gobblers take the treats from the Apaches
10\31\03
Apache Stadium-We came and we took it! From the land of 'Come and Take It' the Gobblers had their Halloween game faces on tonight with a victory. That makes 8 in a row for the young Gobblers. The game was a typical Cuero\Gonzales match-up. Fast paced, hard hitting and trick plays all night. The Gobbler defense was key in this victory.
The apaches moved the ball on their first possession from the 20 to the Cuero 30. On 4th down Zach forced the quarterback to rush the pass and it went in the dirt. The Gobblers took over and on 3rd down Matt threw an interception that the apaches thought was a touchdown, but there was a holding penalty and Cuero punted the ball. The apaches were able to move the ball into Gobbler territory again. On 4th down Brady picked off a pass, shutting down their threat. Matt used Latrael and Zach to move the ball downfield. The first quarter ended 0-0.
Matt found Hilbrech for a big gain. Zach punched it in from 4 yds. Kuecker's foot made it 7-0. It looked like it was going to rain at anytime. The air was so thick it was hard to breath. The apaches were stopped by the Gobbler defense lead by the two R's....
Robinson and Rauch. On third and 15, the apaches tried to pass but Martell was able to pick it off. Zach found a huge hole and sprinted up the middle for a 24 yd gain. On the next play Matt was picked off and the apaches brought the ball back to the 50. On a forth down play Gonzales completed a pass and a penalty to get to the 6 yd line. They found a gap in the line and tied the score 7-7. Nick took the kick-off 80 yds into the end-zone but was called back saying he stepped out of bounds. The half ended with an interception.
In the third quarter Cooper fumbled and the apaches recovered. On the next play the Gobbler defense made the apaches put the ball on the ground and Justin snatched it up.
The offense moved the ball down to the 47. The O-line blew open a hole in the apaches defense and Zach flew threw it 43 yds to the end-zone. Kuecker made it 14-7. The Gobbler defense proved it's worth bending but not breaking the rest of the game. The apaches were ooking for another 4th down conversion but were denied. Matt used Cooper 4 straight times. On the 4th run Cooper busted down the sidelines for a 46 yd touchdown. The extra point was no good and the score was 20-7. Gonzales was driving the ball when Zach stepped in front of a pass and ran into the end-zone from over 50 yds out. The play was called back (naturally). It was a great night for yellow....I thought we were in Pittsburgh, with the Terrible Towels flying around...ha ha ha!
Cuero held on to the ball and ran the clock out.
With the District title in sight the Gobblers are looking forward to playing at home next week. The eagles are coming to town and will be hungry after beating Yoakum tonight.
The Gobblers will be ready!!
Great job Gobblers. Final 20-7.
Gobblers surround Apaches in 20-7 win
by Glenn Rea
Record Editor -A district rivalry marred by 15 penalties and eight turnovers Friday night in Gonzales ended with Cuero’s Gobblers claiming their eighth straight win.
Cuero cinched a play-off birth with the 20-7 win over Gonzales’ Apaches and now boast of a 4-0 district record.
In one of their most physical games of the season, Cuero’s defense came out on top in a battle of fourth-down tries. The Apaches were successful only once out of five fourth-down attempts to keep the ball.
The Gobbler defense was tested early as Gonzales started their first possession from the Apache 20. Mixing a combination of ground, air and trick plays, Gonzales moved to Cuero’s 30 yard-line in eight plays. But on a fourth-and-nine pass attempt, the Apache quarterback was introduced to Gobbler safety Zach Gomez who forced a quick throw that hit the dirt.
Cuero’s first possession ended in a close-call as the Apaches intercepted a Matt Schumacher pass at the Gobbler 35 and returned it to the end-zone for an apparent touchdown. But a holding call on Gonzales gave Cuero a chance to punt the ball away.
Again Gonzales started a successful drive moving from their own 37 to Cuero’s 37 in five plays. The Gobbler defense stiffened forcing Gonzales to attempt a pass on fourth-and-eight. But Gobbler Brady Urbanovsky stepped in front of the Apache pass claiming the interception.
He returned the ball just over 15 yards to the Apache 47 before he was tackled. Schumacher called on running-backs Latrael Cooper and Gomez to pound the Apache line six straight times.
With the start of the second quarter, Schumacher hit Brandon Hilbrich with a pass deep in Gonzales’ territory and the referees tacked on a roughing the passer call to give Cuero a first down at the Apache four.
Gomez only needed one try to cross over untouched for Cuero’s first score of the night. Brandon Kuecker kicked the extra point and Cuero had a 7-0 lead with 11:25 left in the first half.
The Gobbler defense took charge of the game for the next several minutes as Matt Rauch and Justin Robinson spoiled any attempt by the Apaches to move the ball.
Three penalties on Cuero’s next possession resulted in a Hilbrich punt to the Gonzales 36.
Gonzales lost ground after two tries on the ground and went to the air on a third-and-15. But Gobbler Martell Williams was there to pick off the pass and give Cuero the ball at their own 36.
Gomez again thrilled Gobbler fans with a run up the middle for 24 yards to the Apache 36. But the drive ended on the next play when Gonzales intercepted a Cuero pass and returned it to mid-field.
With about three minutes left in the first half, the Apaches connected on a fourth down pass and got additional relief when Cuero was called for roughing the passer.
With the ball at Cuero’s six, Gonzales found a way to get through the Gobbler line and scored seven points to tie the game with 1:27 left in the quarter.
Cuero answered the score after the kick-off when Nick Taylor shot down the left side-line untouched into the end-zone from 70 yards out. But the referees called the play back saying the Gobbler junior had stepped on the line at the Apache 30. An interception ended the drive and the first half with the game tied 7-7.
Just seconds into the third period, Cuero tailback Cooper fumbled the ball on a second-and-long situation. But the Gobbler defense gave Cuero another chance when Robinson grabbed an Apache fumble on the very next play.
After exchanging punts, Gonzales mounted a time consuming drive from their own 16. A stingy Cuero defense of Urbanovsky, Gomez, Aaron Saenz, Dakota Williams, Robinson, Rauch and Nick Taylor only allowed short yardage. After 14 downs, Gonzales was forced to give the ball to Cuero when they failed to gain a first on a fourth-and-four try at the Gobbler 37.
Schumacher kept the ball on the first down try and moved Cuero forward five yards. Gomez added another 11 yards giving Cuero a first down at the Gonzales 47.
The offensive line opened a wide gap in the Apache defense giving Gomez an easy romp into the end-zone for Cuero’s second TD of the game. With one minute left in the third quarter, Kuecker’s kick put Cuero up 14-7.
In spite of a sack by Rauch on first down, Gonzales was able to move to Cuero’s 30 yard-line on their next possession. But a key pass deflection by Martell Williams on a third-an-two try forced Gonzales to look for another fourth down miracle. It was not to be with Robinson, Josh Guajardo and Gomez and the rest of the Gobbler middle there refuse any yardage.
Cuero took over at their own 31. The Gobbler offense had taken its toll on the Apache defense. Cooper carried four straight times. The last was a 46-yard touchdown run along the left side. The try for extra points failed and Cuero was on top 20-7.
With eight minutes left in the game, it seemed endurance or penalties could become deciding factors.
Great pass defense by Gomez gave way to a pass interference call on Cuero on the next down. Gonzales was threatening at the Gobbler 32 when Martell Williams, Taylor, Guajardo and Rauch forced the Apaches to go to the air.
When they did Gomez stepped in front of the ball the grab the interception. He flew across the field for 50 yards in what looked like another Cuero touchdown. But the refs saw another penalty by the Gobblers and brought the ball back to the Cuero 37.
Schumacher, Cooper and Larvell Roy worked their magic to hang on to the ball and move Cuero to the Apache nine in 10 plays. But more importantly, Cuero used the remaining time on the clock and was satisfied to end the game with a 20-7 win.
