Gobbler Stadium- Well Gobbler fans, finally and I mean finally, it really feels like football weather here tonight. A little cool front blew in Thursday and you would think we were playin' in Minnesota or somethin'...ha ha! Everyone is bundled up and shivering...maybe a game that I might not sweat. Anyway, it is Parents Night and the District Championship is on the line for the Gobblers to own out-right, not sharing it with anyone else. Not since the '97 team shut-out the entire district have they held that gold football for themselves.
The Gobblers, looking for their ninth straight win, won the toss and defered to the second half. The eagles used their big back Steen, to keep control of the ball on their first drive, and put it in the end-zone for a 7-0 lead. The Gobbler offense stumped their toe and punted after 3 downs. The eagles thought that they smelt victory early but the Gobbler defense stiffened and forced a punt. Cuero's offense took control and moved the ball down but on 4th down decided to kick a field goal. Kuecker launched one down the middle from 31 yds. The first quarter ended with the score 3-7.
But thats where the eagle lead stopped. Cooper busted down the sideline to take the lead with an 80 yd. gallop early in the 2nd quarter, making it 10-7. Cooper cut back to the left and exploded through a huge hole in the eagle defense. He out ran the eagles 62 yds and put the Gobblers up 17-7.
With a shorter field, the eagles found a way to get the ball close enough for Steen to get his second and last score of the night. He went around the right end and into the end-zone from 20 yds. out. Luling muffed their point after kick and the score was 17-13. But sports fans thats as close as it got tonight and the last time the eagles would score on the Champions field!!
Before the half was over, Matt found Nick down the right side and tossed the ball to hm for a 19 yd. score. Kuecker's kick was good and the Gobblers took a 24-13 lead into the locker room. I heard Steen yell at his team "Come on guy's, they ain't that good." I looked at the scoreboard and thought ,"24 is better than 13"!
The Trotters had a reunion and put on a little routine for the fans at half-time. They were chilly but they looked like they had a bunch of fun anyway.
In the second half the eagles tried to get things moving but the Gobbler defense was not going to be denied! It showed because several penalties arose with dead ball fouls, due to frustration. Cooper unloaded again with a huge run - I am sorry that I do not have the yardage on that one - and that with Kuecker's kick made it 31-13.
In the second half Hilbrich's foot kept the eagles backed up so the defense had plenty of room the hold them at bay. Zach, Martell, Nick and Jeremy covered the eagle recievers well. They picked off two passes. Martell picked off one and his run back wasn't huge but it sure was exciting as he cut and weaved through the tacklers getting hit from all directions untill the finally brought him down.
Matt found Jeremy on the sideline and threw a strike for a 44 yd touchdown. Kuecker's foot made it 38-13. Oh yeah...."they ain't that good...". The final score came when Matt located Brady on a 13 yd toss to seal the victory. Kuecker made it 45-13. Brandon was 6 of 6 and a field goal.
The Gobbler offensive line done a fine job opening holes and protecting Matt, allowing him time to throw.
The Gobbler defensive front controled the eagle line the second half, putting pressure on the quarterback and stopping many plays at the line of scrimmage.
It was a team effort, a team victory!!
Congratulations Gobblers! District Champions 27-3A 2003.
Play-off fever is here. The Gobblers will play the Wharton Tigers at Victoria Memorial Stadium Friday Nov.14 at 7:30...come catch it!!

CUERO - A big second quarter burst help propel the Cuero Gobblers past the Luling Eagles to a 45-13 and the District 27-3A title.
Luling (5-5, 2-3) looked good early in its upset bid when Elroy Steen scored on a 12-yard run for the visitors. Joey Sanchez added the extra point. Cuero cut into that lead before the first quarter was complete on a 31-yard field goal by Brandon Kuecker. The kicker was 6-for-6 on extra points.
Early in the second quarter, Cuero went up for good on a pair of impressive runs by Latrael Cooper. The Gobbler back followed up an 80-yard scoring run with a 62-yard touchdown sprint for a 17-7 edge.
Luling would keep things interesting as Steen notched his second TD of the night on a 20-yard run.
The Gobblers would get another score before the end of the half when Matt Schumacher connected with Nick Taylor for a 19-yard touchdown.
In the second half, Cooper added his third touchdown of the night. That score was followed by a pair of Schumacher touchdown passes. The first covered 44 yards to Jeremy Ross; the second went to Brady Urbanovsky for 13 yards to close out the scoring.
