Tri-Valley All Stars Punish Quentin Cons
SAN QUENTIN -- The Tri-Valley All Stars used four pitchers and a five-run first inning to coast to an 11-4 win over the San Quentin Giants Wednesday, May 3.
With the win, the All Stars took the first of the three games scheduled against the Giants in the 2000 season. The All Stars also will face the inmates on June 21 and July 5. Making the trip Wednesday were Jordan Bluestein, Jeff Husen, Jeff Carr and John Allen from the Tri-Valley Rangers; Steve Apodaca from the Tri-Valley Stars; Ed Santero from the Tri-Valley Livermore Angels and Rick Maida from the San Fransico MSBL.
The All Stars made three trips to San Quentin in 1999, winning twice against the then Pirates. The Cons changed their team name to the Giants after the San Francisco Giants donated their warmup uniforms to the California prison last year.
Looking sharp, and the addition of hard-throwing Tony Gonzales, didn't keep the Giants from falling behind early. Gonzales, a former Chabot College right-hander, surrendered five runs on four hits and a walk in the first inning. Husen had an RBI single and Allen doubled home a run for the All Stars. But it was Ed Santero who delivered the knockout blow, hammering a 1-2 fastball over the wall in right-center for a three-run homer, giving the All Stars a 5-0 advantage.
Gonzales settled down to pitch five full innings, throwing as hard in the last as he did in the first. He gave up seven runs in all (five earned), walked two and struck out nine. He also gave up 12 hits.
The Giants got one back off of starting pitcher Allen in the first with the help of two singles and an infield error. But the All Stars pitching staff held the Giants in check the rest of the way, allowing just single runs in the third, fifth and sixth. The game ended after six innings because of darkness.
Maida earned the win by pitching three innings for the All Stars. He came on in relief of Allen and allowed one run on two hits while striking out four. Husen and Apodaca both pitched one inning. Both allowed one run each and Husen struck out two.
Apodaca and Maida had three hits each while Allen, Santero and Carr had two hits apiece. Santero led the team in RBI with four and Apodaca had two.
Because the All Stars had only six players at game time, they borrowed three players from the Giants. The three inmates were a combined 1-for-11 with six strikeouts.
If you would like to face the Giants at San Quentin you must be able to pass a security check of your record and be at the gate by 5 p.m. on scheduled game days. If you're interested, call Jordan Bluestein at the Tri-Valley Rangers phone number (925-937-1625). Leave a message and be prepared to give your drivers license info, name as it appears on the drivers license, social security number and date of birth.
