Where did they come from , and how were they conceived ?

On the one (fictional) hand we have two possible explanations as the history of the daleks was basically rewritten by their creator Terry Nation in the mid 1970s with 'Genesis Of The Daleks'. Before this story the daleks were survival machines adopted by the Dals to see them through the aftermath of nuclear war with the Thals on their joint home planet Skaro . In 'Genesis' Nation introduced the character of Davros , the crippled scientist who created the Daleks not so much so that his own race could survive , but so that mutated creatures based upon its genetic stock could do so - creatures which had previously had no independent existence and were but a projection of where the Kaled (anagram of dalek , or vice-versa if you prefer) race was to end up .
