Rivieccio Powers All Stars to Convincing Win
Newburgh, NY - Nicole Rivieccio went 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs and launched a 2 run homer to help lead the New Windsor Minors All Stars to a 28-14 win over Minisink in opening round action in the Little League District 19 Tournament. Rivieccio's blast capped a 16 run second inning for New Windsor.
Minisink pushed across two runs in the top of the first but New Windsor answered with three runs to take a 3-2 lead after one inning. Minisink's bats came alive in the second inning however, as they sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs to regain the lead 14-3. Not to be outdone, New Windsor batted around twice in the bottom of the second, sending up 20 hitters of their own and scoring 16 runs to retake the lead 19-14 at the end of two innings.

New Windsor's defense then took over and shut Minisink down in the third inning. After a walk to the lead off batter, New Windsor pitcher Laura Stafford got the next batter to bounce back to the mound and she easily threw her out at first. Catcher Maria Schettini then came up with a big play, throwing a bullet to third baseman Jenna Clemente to nail the runner who was attempting to steal. Minisink got another baserunner on with a single but she was erased when the next hitter grounded to second baseman Maryssa Denisar, who tagged the runner for an unassisted putout to end the inning for Minisink.
New Windsor slammed the door in the bottom of the third, adding nine more runs to their total to take a 28-14 lead. Minisink managed a walk and a single to open the fourth but both runners were erased on unassisted putouts at third base by Jenna Clemente. The next batter lined out sharply to shortstop Kristen Wolfe and the inning was over.
The game was then halted and the victory awarded to New Windsor due to the 10 run mercy rule. According to Little League rules, if a team has a 10 run or more lead after 3 1/2 innings, the game is declared over.
New Windsor will play Cornwall (19-8 winners over Goshen) on Thursday in Montgomery. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

All Stars No Hit By Cornwall
Montgomery, NY - Mark this down...Cornwall High School is going to dominate Section 9 high school softball during the latter part of this decade. The Cornwall Major League All Stars won the District 19 Tournament last week and their Minor Leaguers are well on their way to repeating last year's title run. The 9 and 10 year old New Windsor All Stars got an up close and personal look at the CHS Class of '09 on Thursday. When the dust had settled, Cornwall had emerged with a 30-1 win over New Windsor.
Cornwall scored 8 runs in the top of the first but the potent New Windsor offense was capable of a big inning of their own so the mood was still upbeat in the dugout. Four New Windsor batters later, the defense was back out in the field as Cornwall's Kelsey Hand had thrown nothing but smoke and struck out two of the batters that she faced in the inning.
Things didn't get any better after that. New Windsor's defense fell apart quickly in the top of the second. They uncharacteristically committed 3 errors facing the first six batters of the inning and instead of a scoreless inning, Cornwall went on to score 16 runs and the contest was all but over. New Windsor managed a run on four walks in the second but Cornwall scored 6 more in the third to take a 30-1 lead.

Break Up No Hitter in 4th

Only four New Windsor players managed to put the ball into play. Maria Schettini popped out to second in the first inning, Laura Stafford grounded out to first in the second and Melissa Kaknis fouled out to catcher in the fourth. New Windsor's best chance at a hit came from the last batter of the game, Lauren Mager. Mager lined a 1-2 pitch towards left but was robbed of a hit by the Cornwall third baseman who made an outstanding leaping catch.
New Windsor will face Warwick on Saturday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m. The game will be held at the Town of Newburgh fields.

All Star Bats Awaken in Win Over Warwick
Newburgh, NY - Maria Schettini went 4-4 with two triples, three runs scored, and six RBIs as the New Windsor All Stars defeated Warwick 28-10 in action at the Town of Newburgh Little League Fields. Lauren Mager (2-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 5 steals), Nicole Rivieccio (2-6, 2 runs, double), Jenna Clemente
(6 walks, 3 runs, 6 steals), and Laura Stafford (5 walks, 3 runs, 4 steals) also starred on offense for New Windsor.
After New Windsor loaded the bases but failed to score in the top of the first, Warwick scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead after one. New Windsor pushed across five runs in the second inning, highlighted by Schettini's two run triple. Warwick picked up two hits and three walks in the second off of New Windsor pitcher Laura Stafford and turned them into 5 runs to regain the lead at 6-5.
A double by Nicole Chewens and six New Windsor walks plated three more runs in the top of the third as the All Stars retook the lead for good at 8-6. Stafford regained her control and set the side down in order in the bottom of the inning, striking out the last two Warwick batters.

Start and Win

New Windsor sent 16 batters to the plate in the fourth inning. They scored 10 runs on only 4 hits (2 by Mager) in the inning as the Warwick pitcher walked 9 batters. Warwick got to Stafford for three hits and four runs in the bottom of the fourth but Stafford managed two more strikeouts to end the threat.
Nicole Rivieccio doubled and Maria Schettini tripled to ignite another ten run rally for New Windsor as they took a 28-10 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Warwick's leadoff batter doubled and stole third but was erased when the next batter grounded back to Stafford who nailed the runner trying to score for the first out. The game ended with a double play as Warwick's next batter lined out to Stafford, who then tossed over to Rivieccio at first to double the runner off.
The game was then halted and the victory awarded to New Windsor due to the 10 run mercy rule. According to Little League rules, if the visiting team has a 10 run or more lead after the completion of 4 innings or more, the game is declared over.
New Windsor will next play on Monday at the Town of Newburgh Little League Fields against Montgomery. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

Schettini and Chewens Lead All Stars to Win
Newburgh, NY - Maria Schettini went 3 for 3, scored 4 runs, stole 7 bases, had 3 RBIs and pitched the sixth inning to pick up her first save as the New Windsor All Stars advanced to the "A Bracket" Final of the Loser's Bracket with a 16-14 win over Montgomery in a game played at the Town of Newburgh Little League Fields. New Windsor will play Middletown on Wednesday in Newburgh with the winner advancing to the Championship Round.
Starting pitcher Nicole Chewens worked 4 2/3 strong innings to pick up the win and even her playoff record at 1-1. She struckout a New Windsor playoff high seven batters while yielding seven hits and 12 runs. Teammate Jenna Clemente bailed New Windsor out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth when she relieved Chewens and after a walk to load the bases, got the Montgomery leadoff hitter to strike out to preserve the lead at 13-12. Schettini came in to close out the win in the sixth and gave up two runs on three hits before getting Serena McGrath (3-4, 3 RBIs) to pop out to end the game.
New Windsor struck first with four runs in the top of the first on six straight walks and an RBI groundout by Melissa Kaknis. Four Montgomery walks plated a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1 after one.

Back to back singles by Schettini and Laura Stafford and a pair of walks accounted for three more New Windsor runs in the second. Chewens struck out three batters in the second as New Windsor's lead was stretched to 7-1.
Stafford and Schettini knocked in two more runs in the third. Montgomery struck back in the bottom of the third with four hits and five walks to plate 7 runs and close the gap to 9-8.
A fourth inning leadoff triple by Nicole Rivieccio and a single by Lauren Mager ignited the offense as they put up three more runs to push the lead to 12-8. Chewens was brilliant in the bottom of the inning, allowing a single but recording two strikeouts and inducing an easy grounder to secondbaseman Maryssa Denisar who flipped to first for the out.
New Windsor got a single run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Kaknis, scoring Schettini who singled and then stole second and third. Montgomery scored four run in the bottom of the fifth before Clemente saved the day for Chewens and New Windsor.
Three more runs were stolen (literally) in the sixth when Kristen Wolfe and Stafford both stole home on passed balls and Schettini snuck home from second on an error by the thirdbaseman on a ball hit by Denisar. The runs proved large as Montgomery got two back before Schettini closed it out.

All Stars Advance to Championship Round
With 14-4 Win Over Middletown
Newburgh, NY - Picture this scenario. Your opponent loads the bases with no outs in the first. They have eight hits through four innings. You get only four hits in the game. Your top two hitters go hitless. Sounds like a big time loss, right?
Well the New Windsor Houdinis (ah... All Stars) managed to escape all of the above and come out on top 14-4 over Middletown in a District 19 Tournament game at the Town of Newburgh Little League Fields. If you were there watching, you left thinking that New Windsor dominated the game!
In the strangest game yet in the playoffs, New Windsor did dominate by doing the little things, like stealing 25 bases!!!! They also managed 14 walks and stole home an amazing six times.
"I told our girls before the game that we were going to steal 20 bases in the game," said New Windsor Manager Jack Mager. "They laughed at me and said 'no way'. Coach Lou (Rivieccio), Coach Rob (Chewens), and I scout the catcher and fielders closely during the warmups to determine if we can steal. We had a hunch that it was going to turn into a track meet if we could get on base."
New Windsor put up six runs in the bottom of the first after Maria Schettini pitched out of a bases loaded, no outs, jam in the first. Back to back 2 RBI singles by Lillian Bonet and Angela Demarco ignited the offense and Demarco capped the inning by stealing home.
An unearned Middletown run made it 6-1 before New Windsor slammed the door with seven runs in the second to make it 13-1 after two innings. Amazingly enough, Maryssa Denisar's two singles were the only hits of the inning as eight other batters walked!

Three Middletown hits drove in two more runs in the third but New Windsor got one back in the bottom of the inning when Nicole Chewens walked, then stole second, third, and home. Three more hits by Middletown in the fourth knocked in another run to make it 14-4 but Schettini then took matters into her own hands. She retired a batter on a come backer to the mound, caught an infield popup, and then struck out the last batter of the inning. The game was then halted and the victory awarded to New Windsor due to the 10 run mercy rule.
The victory advances New Windsor out of the "A Bracket" loser's bracket and into the Championship Round to face Florida. Florida was the "B Bracket" loser's bracket winner. Cornwall will face Town of Wallkill in the winner's bracket while New Windsor plays Florida on Friday in Otisville at 5:45 p.m. The New Windsor-Florida winner will then play the Cornwall-Town of Wallkill loser. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Cornwall-Town of Wallkill game and will have to beat them twice to win the District 19 Championship.
Stay tuned. There may be more miracles left in New Windsor's magic hat.

Chewens Rallies All Stars Past Florida
Otisville, NY - Nicole Chewens' two out double drove in Angela Demarco with the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the New Windsor All Stars squeaked past Florida 10-9 in District 19 Tournament action in Otisville. Demarco had tied the game with a clutch single, also with two outs. Her hit scored Lillian Bonet who had walked, stolen second, and advanced to third on a groundout. Maryssa Denisar picked up the win in relief of Laura Stafford who pitched 4 strong innings, yielding 3 runs (2 of which were unearned). Stafford was lifted due to the 9 innings per week pitching limitation.
Florida picked up two quick unearned runs on two hits and an error in the first to take an early 2-0 lead. It looked like the All Stars were in for a long day after they were set down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, their first two batters striking out.
New Windsor managed to hold Florida scoreless, yielding only one hit in the top of the second. A double by Nicole Rivieccio scored Lillian Bonet who had walked, to make it 2-1 after two.
Florida got two more hits in the third to add another run before New Windsor tied it at three in the bottom of the inning. Stafford walked and scored on a passed ball then Bonet walked, and stole second, third, and home to account for New Windsor's runs.
Three walks and a passed ball gave Florida the lead back 4-3 in the top of the fourth. That lead didn't last long though as eight New Windsor walks pushed across five runs to make it 8-4 in favor of New Windsor.

Game Winning RBI Double in the 6th

Denisar came in to pitch the fifth and retired the first batter on a come backer to the mound before issuing a walk to the next batter. She then recorded a strikeout prior to walking the next two hitters to load the bases. Denisar and New Windsor escaped unscathed, however, when she fielded a grounder and threw home to Maria Schettini for the force out. Jenna Clemente singled with one out and advanced to third in the bottom of the fifth but the next two batters struck out to end the New Windsor threat.
Florida didn't roll over as they sent eleven batters to the plate and scored five runs off of Denisar in the top of the sixth to yet again regain the lead 9-8. Denisar yielded only two hits but hit two batters and walked four before regaining her control and striking out two of the last three batters. The stage was then set for Chewens' two out heroics as New Windsor scored two runs to win the game 10-9.
New Windsor returns to action on Saturday against the Town of Wallkill, 20-2 losers to Cornwall in winner's bracket action. New Windsor's only loss was
30-1 to Cornwall on July 12th. The game will be played at the Town of Newburgh Fields at 11:00 a.m.

All Stars Lose Heartbreaker to Town of Wallkill 16-15
Newburgh, NY - The New Windsor Minors All Stars were three outs from a trip to the District 19 Championship Game and a rematch with Cornwall. But twelve Town of Wallkill batters and two New Windsor errors later, the All Stars found themselves trailing by one run going into the bottom of the sixth. Despite loading the bases, they were unable to score and fell to Wallkill 16-15 and were eliminated from the Tournament.
Wallkill scored three unearned runs in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. New Windsor answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, keyed by an RBI single by Laura Stafford.
Two more unearned runs allowed Wallkill to regain the lead in the top of the second. New Windsor ended a bases loaded Wallkill threat when catcher Maria Schettini recovered a passed ball and made a perfect throw to pitcher Nicole Chewens who tagged the runner out who was attempting to steal home. New Windsor tied the score at five in their half of the second when Kristen Wolfe doubled, stole third and came home on an errant throw.
Unbelievably, New Windsor gave up five more unearned runs in the third. After a leadoff single, the next batter was safe on a New Windsor throwing error. Chewens then got the next two outs, the first on a grounder back to the mound and then a strikeout. A double, a walk, a single, and another double plated five runs and gave Wallkill a 10-5 lead with a runner still on second. The inning ended on a fine play by second baseman Lauren Mager, who fielded a grounded that took a wicked hop and nipped the runner at first.
Trailing 10-5, the New Windsor offense responded with seven runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the third. The outburst was keyed by a double by Nicole Rivieccio and singles by Kristen Wolfe and Schettini.
Chewens had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth. She struck out the leadoff batter, induced a grounder to Mager, and caught the third batter looking at a called third strike. Rivieccio was safe on an error to lead off the New Windsor half of the fourth but was thrown out trying to steal second. Maryssa Denisar managed to work a walk but New Windsor was held scoreless.
New Windsor then was forced to changed pitchers because Chewens had reached her nine inning weekly limit. Schettini came in to relieve Chewens and managed a 1-2-3 inning of her own, literally. The first batter lined out to her. The next hitter grounded back to the mound and Schettini tossed to Rivieccio for the second out. She then got the final batter looking at a called third strike.
Chewens led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and scored on a single by Jenna Clemente. Clemente was forced out at third but Schettini and Stafford scored two more runs as New Windsor took a 15-10 lead into the fateful sixth inning.
The sixth opened with the Wallkill batter reaching on a fielding error. The next batter tripled and scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 15-12. A single, a walk, and a double steal put runners on second and third with nobody out. The next batter lined to secondbaseman Angela Demarco for the first out. A walk loaded the bases before Schettini struck out the next batter for the second out. A grounder to short nearly ended the game but the runner was safe at second when she beat the throw and the run scored making it 15-13. Three straight walks accounted for three more runs before a line out to short ended the inning with New Windsor now trailing 16-15.

Wolfe led off with a walk and stole second putting New Windsor in a great position to tie the game. A popup to second and a groundout to second got Wolfe to third but now with two outs. The next two batters walked to load the bases but the Wallkill pitcher struck out the last New Windsor batter and the game was over.
New Windsor finishes the District 19 Tournament with a fine 5-2 record. They will play July 28th and 29th in the Marlboro 10 and Under Tournament.

New Windsor Walks Over Marlboro 25-5
Marlboro, NY - New Windsor's Minor All Stars returned to action on Thursday, July 26th and downed the Marlboro 10 and Under All Stars 25-5, in a game played at Marlboro High School. New Windsor (6-2) was eliminated last Saturday from the Little League District 19 Tournament by the Town of Wallkill and is now winding down their season with a series of games against local teams.
The game was played using Babe Ruth League rules, as Marlboro is a member of that Association. The major game rules differences between Babe Ruth and Little League are that stealing is prohibited and that ten players are utilized in the field defensively. The no stealing rule put a major clamp on New Windsor's offensive style as the All Stars were averaging 22 stolen bases per game coming into the contest.
The starting pitcher for Marlboro was sharp in the warmups and it looked like New Windsor could be in for a long night at the plate. Nicole Chewens led off for the All Stars and took the count to 3 and 2 before working a walk. Then, the unbelievable happened.
Twelve batters and two relief pitchers later, New Windsor had put ten runs up on the board on thirteen straight walks! Marlboro's fourth pitcher of the game finally recorded an out on a fielder's choice before walking the next batter. A fine play by the Marlboro first baseman saved two more runs as she backhanded a sharp grounder down the line and stepped on the bag for the second out. Lauren Mager's second walk of the inning loaded the bases and Melissa Kaknis got an RBI the hard way as she was then hit by a pitch. A strikeout ended the carnage but the damage had been done as New Windsor had taken a 13-0 lead in the top of the first.
Marlboro managed two unearned runs in their half of the first. The first three batters reached on an error, a walk, and a single to plate one run. A fielder's choice finally got an out for New Windsor but drove in another run for Marlboro. New Windsor pitcher Laura Stafford (3-0, 7.76 ERA) then took matters into her own hands and struck the next two batters out to end the inning.
The second inning started out completely different from the first as two New Windsor batters struck out before Jenna Clemente managed a walk after falling behind 0-2 in the count. That opened the floodgates as Stafford then walked and Maria Schettini singled to load the bases. The nightmare then returned for Marlboro as the next eight New Windsor batters walked, driving in eight more runs. To make matters worse, Stafford then lined a two run single to left and Schettini followed that with a two run double before Marlboro managed a strikeout for the third out.
Marlboro's leadoff batter opened their half of the second with a walk but she was erased when the next batter grounded to Clemente at third and she threw to second for the force out. A walk and a groundout to second put runners at the corners with two outs but Schettini made an unassisted putout at first and the inning was over with New Windsor holding a commanding 25-2 lead.

Mager walked, Kaknis advanced her to second on a groundout and Katie Fraine walked to open New Windsor's half of the third. The rally stopped there however, as the next three All Stars went down quietly to end the inning. Marlboro pushed another run across in the bottom of the inning to make it 25-3 after three.
Stafford and Schettini both singled in the New Windsor fourth but three fine Marlboro defensive plays held New Windsor scoreless again. New Windsor allowed a runner to get to second on a two base error to open the bottom of the fourth and she scored on a putout at first on the next batter. Back to back singles knocked in another run for Marlboro but a groundout to Mager at second and a lineout to Stafford ended the inning. With no lights at the field, the game was then called due to darkness.
Marlboro and New Windsor will square off on Saturday at Ruscitti Park. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start. This will be the only home game of the summer for the New Windsor All Stars.

All Stars Drop 13-10 Decision to Marlboro
New Windsor, NY - Saturdays just don't agree with the New Windsor Minor All Stars. They lost last Saturday to Wallkill after leading going into the sixth and dropped another Saturday game, this time to Marlboro despite holding a 7-6 lead in the fifth.
The game started out well for New Windsor as starting pitcher Nicole Chewens set Marlboro down quietly in the top of the first. Two New Windsor walks and an RBI single by Angela Demarco put the All Stars up 1-0 just three batters into the inning. A strike out and another walk loaded the bases for Jenna Clemente with one out. She drove in a run on an error on the pitcher and Lauren Mager then walked to force in another run. Lillian Bonet got an RBI on a fielder's choice at third and New Windsor had jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Both teams failed to score in the second but Marlboro came alive in the third with four hits and four walks to plate five runs. New Windsor loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third but couldn't score to trail 5-4 after three.
Two singles and a ground out pushed another run across for Marlboro before New Windsor turned a double play to end the inning. Melissa Kaknis was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth and after a strikeout, Maryssa Denisar and Kristen Wolfe both walked to load the bases. Chewens then grounded to short to force Wolfe but two runs scored to tie the game at six. A walk to Laura Stafford was followed by an RBI single by Demarco as New Windsor retook the lead 7-6. Marlboro ended the rally when their shortstop made an outstanding grab of a line drive by Maria Schettini that had triple or more written all over it.

Four hits, two walks, and a New Windsor error later, Marlboro had scored five more runs and was back out on top 11-7. New Windsor got one run back when they tallied three walks and a single around a strikeout in the bottom of the fifth. Marlboro then changed pitchers and ended the rally when she fanned the next two batters .
Stafford then relieved Chewens and was bitten by the error bug as she allowed two more runs that were both unearned.
Trailing by five in the bottom of the sixth, Wolfe walked and Chewens was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. A groundout advanced both runners but the next batter struck out bringing Schettini to the plate with two outs. She singled to drive in two runs and Nicole Rivieccio walked to bring the tying run to the plate. But it was not to be as a grounded to third forced Schettini and the game was over.
The All Stars close out their summer season on Sunday in the rubber game of their three game series with Marlboro. The game, at Marlboro High School, will be held at the conclusion of the Marlboro 12 and Under Championship Game. The game will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m.

All Stars Shut Out in Season Finale
Marlboro - You could say that the New Windsor season was just two games too long. After an impressive 25-5 win over Marlboro on Thursday, they fell to Marlboro 13-10 on Saturday before losing again 9-0 on Sunday.
How flat was New Windsor? They recorded eight hits but managed to get a runner as far as third base only two times. The All Stars also struck out eight times and managed only one walk! Defensively, TEN errors accounted for all but one of Marlboro's nine runs.
A coin flip prior to the game resulted in Marlboro being the "visiting" team so they batted first. A New Windsor error allowed a runner to get to first but the inning ended with a grounder to Maria Schettini at short who threw to first for the third out. Laura Stafford singled for New Windsor but was stranded as the inning ended with the score 0-0.
Three straight errors gave Marlboro a 1-0 lead in the second before Melissa Kaknis came to the rescue for New Windsor. With the bases loaded, the Marlboro batter drilled a ball to center field that Kaknis tracked down for the out. She then ran to second and stepped on the bag to double off the runner. Marlboro scored another run on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 before Schettini forced a runner at third for the final out of the inning.
Maryssa Denisar singled and Jenna Clemente was safe on an error to put two runners on with two outs but a grounder to first ended the New Windsor threat in the bottom of the second.
A strikeout and a popout got the New Windsor defense two quick outs to open the third but five straight errors (including two on one play!), two singles, and a walk plated five more unearned runs for Marlboro. A strikeout ended the inning but the damage had been done and Marlboro held a 7-0 lead. Lauren Mager singled to open the bottom of the third and Lillian Bonet followed with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Two strikeouts and a fielder's choice later, New Windsor walked away empty.
A 1-2-3 inning gave New Windsor a lift as they came to bat in the bottom of the fourth. Stafford and Schettini both singled to once again give New Windsor two runners on with no outs. The result was the same as the third inning however as three straight infield outs killed the rally.

First Playoff Loss Despite Giving Up Only 1 Earned Run

The defensive highlight of the game and possibly the season came in the top of the fifth. After two batters were out for Marlboro, the next batter (the same one who hit into the strange double play in the second) blasted a shot to deep center field. The ball was retrieved and relayed to Schettini who threw a strike to Kaknis (who was now catching) to nail the runner at the plate for the third out.
New Windsor went quietly in the bottom of the fifth on two strikeouts and an easy grounder.
Three singles and a New Windsor error (surprise!) pushed across two more runs for Marlboro to extend their lead to 9-0. For the third time, New Windsor got two hits to open an inning (Bonet and Katie Fraine) and this time followed up with a walk to Nicole Chewens to load the bases with nobody out. But sure enough, the next two batters struck out and a grounder to second ended the game and the season for New Windsor.
New Windsor finishes with a 6-4 overall record after going 5-2 in the District 19 Tournament.
