Fleurieu Combined State Run 2001
Over the June long weekend 9, 10, 11 June.
The Combined Hunt 11am on Sunday 10th.
The hunt was run over a specially prepared course called Brookman North, combining elements of two of the best & most scenic runs. Visitors camped at Kuitpo Hall with toilet and undercover facilities. There was a spacious adjacent paddock for camping & yarding horses.
Richard and Suzanne Trethewey, Carmen Josephs and Annette Florance, and Rodger Borgmeyer were the riders who represented Kangaroo Island. Followers from the Island included Robert Benney and Val Borgmeyer.
Having just returned from the mainland with visions of the hunt still fresh in my mind, it's a good time to get it written down.
Seventy eight riders gathered at Kuitpo on the morning of the 10th June. Some had camped overnight & had shared breakfast over the camp fire amongst the pine trees. Others arrived in time to saddle up and be off by 11 am.
It was cool, still and overcast - ideal hunting weather. There had been a lot of rain and the going became quite boggy after most of the field had past by! Spectators in 28 FWD vehicles were treated to some magnificent scenery, forests, valleys, and undulating lush green countryside. Horses and riders silhouetted against this backdrop created a lasting impression for the spectators. The piper sending the unique strains of his music drifting across the valleys as the huntsmen approached, added to this remarkable vision!
The three & a half hour hunt was broken by a generous stirrup cup & nibbles in one of the paddocks. Riders and horses appreciated the rest & refreshments. It gave the hosting club, visitors from around the state, & the followers, a chance to mingle and catch up with old friends.
One or two unscheduled dismounts resulted in some muddy clothing but no-one was hurt. The hunt master's closing speech, back at Kuitpo, concluded a most enjoyable hunt.
Many visitors stayed on afterwards for the three course meal organised by the Fleurieu Hunt Club, and then camped overnight at the camping ground, before heading to distant parts of the state on Monday.
Others had to leave immediately after the run, but not before discussing the preliminary plans of the 2002 Combined State Run on Kangaroo Island. Flyers for that event were handed out to many of the visitors by the Kangaroo Island Hunt Club members who travelled to Fleurieu.
