Opening Hunt - Bonegilla
By Spurring On.
It was a super day for the opening hunt, the sun was shining, the horses were looking great and the meat for the BBQ was tender, all we needed was some rain to settle the dust from the horses hooves. After a very filling lunch of steaks and salad provided by the land owner's, Overland meat and beer supplied by the Parndana Community club 30 plus followers and about 10 riders merrily proceeded to get ready for the start of the opening hunt for 2001.
Kevin Rourke from Overland Meat officially opened the hunt and mood was set for a fantastic run. The Trethwey family provided almost half of the field with Nathan and Nikki back in the saddle after many years, and Richard our gallant hunt master for 2001 who we shall follow with out hesitation, (except for when he forgets a jump).
Jessica was doing extremely well until her beastie did a real dummy spit and on hopped Karen, just slightly under mounted to give Jess a well-earned break. Stirrup cup was welcomed after the field showed their talent at riding a little like the charge of the light horse brigade over the fence jump. After small cups of port (more like mug sized) poured by Robert Benny the field mounted again for the second part of the hunt which was undertaken without a hitch, (luckily Bob had advised Carmen and Annette not to double over the tree squeeze).
At the second stirrup cup the Landowners were toasted and Cobby subsequently had trouble mounting his nag, I'm sure this had nothing to do with the refreshments consumed. Raz must've tried to kill his ute as it blew black smoke after one hill. At the end the cars all raced along the raceway to get a good position for the final jump, the hay bales plus the Benny bus lined up behind, only to disappoint the field by reversing before we could line it too. Tea was well earned after a fantastic and fun filled opening hunt, hope to see everyone at Agincourt on the 6th May.
