Spectrum Scramble Summary

North Island vs Vic High

North Island had a five hour long drive from Port McNeill to Victoria, and were so close to being late for the game the team was forced to change in the van while arriving in Victoria. NISS went straight from the bus to the court, with only a brief period to warm-up. The fatigue was evident as the team got trounced early in the game. After being dominated in the first quarter, NISS settled down and for the other three quarters NISS played solidly, and only lost the final three quarters by 10 points.

North Island vs Spectrum

The game was the first of the Saturday morning, being played at 9 am, and in Spectrum's home gym. Midway through the first quarter defensive minded shooting guard Matt MacInnis, took a technical foul. Team rules state that he would sit for the rest of the game. Already down one of the team's top six players things got worse. Already down by a large margin in the second quarter, 3-man Doug Petrie was accidently tripped up going for a pass. Doug went down hard on his left elbow and had to come out of the game. He was brought to the hospital and it was later found out that he had dislocated, fractured, and chipped his elbow. NISS was then down two key players and already playing a superior team. North Island fought for the hard game, and never gave up, but the result was a blowout.

Mt. Doug vs North Island

The third and final game of the exhibition Scramble was by far the best played by Norsemen players. Despite being down Doug Petrie due to his earlier injury, and Matt MacInnis unable to play until 5 minutes into the game because of the previous technical, the team came out good. Grade 9 John Chauhan started the game, and provided high energy and stiff defence while in. The team had learned a lot from the game against Spectrum, and played a very physical contest. As well they ran their offense better than they had before. Simon Wainwright and point guard Mark Smith led the team in offense, hitting several outside shots and kept the defence honest with hard cuts and quick drives. 6'10" centre Shaun Laing had a tough defensive assignment in Mt. Doug's 6'10" centre (Provincial team member Mike Klizs), but stepped up and minimized the damage by the oppositions talented big man. As well Shaun was a major force on the glass while he was in the game. Unfortunately Shaun fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Another highlight of the game was Mike van Hemmen's 12 rebounds. Despite the loss the team played very well and gained a lot of valuable experience.
