The North Island Norsemen Senior Boys Basketball team does not have an illustrious past of winning endless amounts of championships. In fact, in past years the Norsemen haven't been ovely competitive. However, three years ago the face of Norsemen basketball changed. Finally there was a school coach who had some experience coaching before, Craig Follis. Follis took over the Junior team and turned around the program. Over the past two seasons the group of players has grown together, improving their skills, and as 2000/2001 season begins, North Island is ready to make a serious impact in BC basketball. We will see you at the Provincials!

Headlines
Up next for the Norsemen are the first two of six league games. In the crucial matches NISS will begin the games at home, taking on the two Powell River teams in their zone. Earlier in the season the team was triumphant over the Max Cameron team. And the Brooks game will be a big emotional game for the team, as there remains some ill feelings on the Norsemen side after the debatacle last year in Brooks. The NISS team is intent on trouncing the Brooks squad not only for last years war, but also because winning all six league games is vital to the team's success in the North Islands.
Jan 13 - The page has undergone a few updates recently. The roster, schedule, results, and profiles pages have all been altered in some way during the course of the Christmas break.
Jan. 13 - The NISS Norsemen have now returned from the frustrating John Barsby Invitational. Hopefully the experiences the team gained during the tournament will help them later in the season during the crucial league games, which are coming up.
The NISS Alumni proved to be an insufficient match for the current Norsemen, as the guys took it to the bigger, but also older, team 85-57. The game was taken in by over 250 fans, every single one cheering for the current NISS team. The game saw the return of Doug Petrie after missing nearly a month because of a dislocated elbow. As well, Manager Mike Scott got some time on the floor in the unofficial exhibition game. Unfortunately neither were able to register a point.
The weekend tournament has been completed for the Norsemen. We are unsure of our official placement, but it is definite that in a great game (though still missing two of the top six players on the team) the Norsemen prevailed over the hometown Carihi Tyees to take the first round game by 3 points. The second game was not nearly as well played by NISS, and the team dropped the contest to the Woodland Golden Eagles by a fair margin. The situation was a poor one for the Norsemen as overnight power forward Mike van Hemmen sprained his ankle due to snowy weather conditions. As well 6'10" centre Shaun Laing was ejected from the game early in the third quarter for an intentional foul. Scheduled to play Vic High for 4 or 6 place, Vic High had to leave because of the snowstorm. In a bit of a mock game (mock because it was 8 minute quarters, no official referees, and an unscheduled contest) the ragtag Norsemen, now missing ANOTHER player due to extenuating circumstances, failed to register a win against a speedy Parklands team.
