Colombus is recognized as one of America's biggest heros- does he deserve that title?

The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Christopher Colombus- heroic discoverer, or Christopher Colombus, mass murderer. It is in my believe that the man all American children grow up learning about, was nothing but a cold hearted murderer of several million Native Americans.Yet we hold him in high regards for what- discovering a land that had been inhabited for thousands of years prior his "discovery"? Considering this man's wrong doings, I come to you today to ask for October 12, Colombus Day, be changed to a day of remebering all those killed by Colombus' achievement. My area of analysis supporting this proposed idea is the following. I believe that this man whom we call a hero, was responsible for the deaths of millions of Native Americans, and should not be honored for this or any deed. Therefore, we shouldn't treat him with as much respect and honor as we do now. We should educate the American public with the wrong doings of this man, which could be considered genocide today, and is similar to Hitler's murdering of innocent Jews. Yet we still picture Colombus as a historical figure with a positive influence on our kids. Do we want our kids to grow up believing that it is okay to kill people when ever they feel like it? Or do we want them to understand that forcing people into slavery, taking their possesions, and murdering innocent people is wrong, inhumane, and stands against every principle from which our counrty was formed on. It is with those beliefs that I feel Colombus Day should be changed to a day of remembering those killed by Colombus, and the history books changed to portray the real image of Colombus.
