HESPERIA — At the Division IV individual regional meet held Saturday, Mason
County Central qualified eight wrestlers for the state Division IV individual championships.
The top four finishers in the each weight class advance to the state
individual finals to be held March 9-11 at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
Central’s Tim Fisk, a sophomore wrestling in the 119-pound weight class,
was the only individual champion for the Spartans.
Jason Fairfield (160) and Nate Oliver (215) placed second. Taking third
places were Sandra Padron (103),Jeremy Larson (112), Evan Lundberg (140), and Jacob Huggard (275). Finishing fourth was the Spartans’Mike George (130).
Oliver dropped a 1-0 decision to Onaway’s Joe Galer, who is undefeated on
the year. Galer is also ranked second in the state in all classes at 215 pounds.
Fairfield was beaten by Benzie Central’s C.J. Sierzputowski on an injury
default in the championship match
at 160 pounds.
“We wrestled pretty well,” said Spartan coach Jack Stibitz. “The
competition was tough, but we are sending
the most wrestlers to state out of this region.”
According the Stibitz, Carson City Crystal and Martin each qualified seven
while Hesperia had six.
“So far this has been a dream season for us,” added Stibitz. “We had a
discouraging start, but the kids arewrestling great now. We have been seeing a lot of signs supporting the kids and their trip to state. We’re a
minor sport and we usually don’t get that, but it’s been great.”
Updated season records for Central’s wrestlers were not reported.
Hart had two wrestlers qualify for the state meet. Scott Dodge and Justin
Sawdy both finished fourth at 112 and 189, respectively.

MOANALUA
Valdez, a freshman, won the 108-pound class by pin to help lead the Menehune to their second consecutive state wrestling championship.

ST. LOUIS
The senior won his second state individual wrestling title, competing at 189 pounds. The University of Hawaii football-signee was second in the state both other years.
GIRLS' WRESTLING
Stephany Lee, Moanalua: Helped lead the Menehune to the state meet championship with an individual victory in the 140-pound class. Lee won her championship match with a pin at 4:51.
Malama Sylve, Leilehua: Was the only repeat individual winner at the state championships, taking the 220-pound class title with a pin at 4:38.
