Manhattan High junior Kera Pemberton won the national high school girls division wrestling championship at the national meet this past weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Pemberton, who has wrestled at 103 pounds the past two seasons on the Manhattan High School varsity squad, posted a perfect 4-0 record to claim the title.

"I really didn't go into it thinking about where I was going to place," said Pemberton. "I was just happy with the way I wrestler.

Pemberton's sister, Cathy, placed fourth in the middle school division.

Pemberton got a bye in her first match, and then won by points in the following three matches.

"The first match I won by two points, and then the other two I won by at least four points," said Pemberton.

Pemberton placed fifth at the national meet as a freshman and was seventh as a sophomore.

Pemberton said about 450 girls competed in the national meet on all age levels.
