TEXAS TOUGH: Brenda Malott finished her senior wrestling season at Sam Houston High School (Arlington, Texas) 28-1 and won the 128-pound state title for the second straight year. Her one loss (to Amarillo Caprock's Minnie Garcie in December) was avenged later in the same tournament and again in the finals at the state tournament.

Malott, who carries a 3.8 grade point average, is a two-time U.S. Girls Wrestling Association All-American.
She was named The Dallas Morning News' Girls Wrestler of the Year for the second year in a row.

GIRL GRAPPLERS: The top Wisconsin girl wrestlers took on top wrestlers from throughout the country at the first U.S. Girls Wrestling Association Wisconsin State Girls Wrestling Championship Open, March 11 at Middleton (Wis.) High School.
Just one Wisconsin champ emerged with a title. Katie Neuens of Niagra pinned Katherine Slota of Middleton in 38 seconds in the 116-pound division.

Liz Short of Lombard, Ill., defeated 107-pound state champ Nella Bernardoni of Darlington, Wis.
Lindsey Trosen of Walcott, N.D. beat Margaret Hosman of Evanston, Ill., at 111 pounds.
Kelsea Quillin of DeKalb, Ill., beat 119-pound state champ Kara Kottra of Genoa City, Wis.
At 130 pounds, Sherri Hilliard of Lakota, N.D., beat Jessica DeGrave of Florence Wis., 7-5 in overtime.
Peggy VanDeMark of Kimball, Minn., beat Marisa Banas of Kenosha Wis., at 137 pounds.
At 145 pounds, Melanie Parchutz of Chicago pinned Jenna Hunter of Elburn, Ill., in 1:41.
At 156 pounds, Elena Mena of St. Paul, Minn., pinned state champ Kathryn Young of Viola, Wis., in 1:28.
At 177 pounds, Alicia Mena of St. Paul, Minn., pinned state champ Anna Frey of Theresa, Wis., in 21 seconds.
