STOCKTON -- Kaci Lyle, Sarah Capik and Nikita Barber earned first-place finishes as the Eureka girls' freestyle wrestling team took home a state title in the high school division at the California Girls State Invitational Saturday.
Eureka ran away with the crown with 48 points. North Fork of San Diego took second place with 21 points. A total of 29 teams entered the tournament, which is sanctioned by the United States Girls Wrestling Association.
"The girls wrestled their hearts out," Eureka coach Herbert Barber said. "We had great performances from everybody."
Lyle, who holds the No. 1 ranking in the state and is ranked third nationaly, captured first place in the 153-pound division. Lyle came one step closer to achieving her goal of making it to the World Team Trials where she could earn a shot at Olympic competition.
Barber won first place in the 62-pound division while her sister, Chelsea, an 80 pounder, took second and won the Doctor Michael Hernandez Award for most falls in the least amount of time. Capik won first in the heavyweight division.
Eureka's Brigitte Sjoquist (140) captured fifth place, Mellisa Faulk (138) came in fifth, Rebeca Mullin (80) took fifth, Chantal Downing (162) came in fifth, See Yang (126) captured fifth and Jamie Eacret (126) took eighth.
