Dallas M.N. MVP: Brenda Malott
4/16/2000
Arl. Sam Houston, girls wrestling
Girls wrestling has become much more competitive, both on a state and
national level. No one is happier about that than Arlington Sam Houston
senior Brenda Malott, but it sure didn't make life on the mat any easier for
her.
"It was a lot tougher this year," said Malott, The News' Girls Wrestler of
the Year for the second year in a row. "The competition was a lot tougher
because the girls are getting more experience."
Malott had two close matches at the state tournament, including a one-point
victory over Amarillo Caprock's Minnie Garcia in the final, but the
competition is still a step behind her.
Malott finished her senior season 32-1 and won the 128-pound state title for
the second year in a row. Malott's one loss - to Garcia in December - was
avenged later in the same tournament and again at the state tournament.
"She is probably more dedicated than most wrestlers," Sam Houston coach Roy
Schultz said. "She put in a lot of extra time and it has paid off."
Malott's dedication has helped develop the sport she loves. Now she might be
getting paid back.
Girls wrestling has become so popular in recent years that a few colleges
are starting to offer scholarships. One college, Missouri Valley, has been
talking to Malott about wrestling on scholarship.
"I thing it's great because there wasn't anything out there just a couple of
years ago," said Malott, who also took ninth at nationals. "The girls have
worked hard and it's good to see something out there for after high school."
