The football in Kharkov have an about 100-years history. Different teams was played in some leagues and competition.

In 30-40 years it was a club named "Lokomotiv" participated in the Soviet major league tournament.

Metallist's history begins in 50's, when it was named "Avangard". Avangard and Metallist are the same team, only with diferent names at different periods.

Below you can read some facts of Avangard's history from one of the olders team fans Sergey Nirenburg. (temporary, only in russian)

Komanda nazyvalas' Avangard. Lokomotiv igral v vysshej lige v konce
sorokovyx-nachale pyatidesyatyx, i ja etogo ne pomnju. Avangard zhe v
1960-61 godax igral xorosho pod rukovodstvom Aleksandra Semenovicha
Ponomareva, v proshlom znamenitogo centr-forvarda moskovskogo Torpedo.
Poslednjuju igru sezona 1961 goda, v kotorom Avangard zanjal shestoe
mesto, on igral v Kieve s Dinamo, kotoromu nuzhna byla nichja dlja togo,
chtoby stat' --- vpervye v istorii --- chempionom. I oni sygrali 0:0.
Ni Ugraitskij, ni Makarov ne propustili. A potom stali zhech' gazety na
tribunax --- snova v pervyj raz. V te gody eshche moglo kazat'sja
neposvjashchennym, vrode menja, chto sredi ukrainskix komand mozhet byt'
ser'eznaja konkurencija, tak chto ja bolel protiv Kieva i s tex por tak
i prodolzhaju, v obshchem i celom.

Sostava Avangarda tex let ja, konechno, polnostju ne pomnju -- sovsem
net spravochnikov. U vas, navernoe, est' teper' dostup k nim. Mozhet
byt', vstavite chto-nibud'? No pomnju, chto v vorotax byl, kak uzhe
skazano, Ugraitskij (nasha xar'kovskaja zvezda; on byl po tem vremenam
ochen' vysokij i moshchnyj; ochen' xorosho igral na vyxodax --- ego
bojalis'' konechno zhe my, mal'chishki, sravnivali ego s Levoj). V
zashchite -- kapitan komandy pravyj zashchitnik Vladimir Onis'ko, zatem
Viktor Mar'enko, otlichnyj centr zashchity, na isxode svoej otlichnoj
kar'ery v moskovskom Torpedo, zatem Maslennikov, Ozheredov, Todorov.


Sovsem ne pomnju poluzashchity. A vperedi sprava igral Kostjuk, potom
Nesterov, Nikolaj Korolev, a potom esche Kashtanov, Klim Xachaturov,
chut' pozdnee, Nemirovsky. Potom esche igrali dva brata Mangasarovy
kakoe-to vremja.

A v 1963 godu Avangard vyletel i uzhe do moego ot'ezda iz Xar'kova
nichem osobennym ne otlichalsja...

The most important event in the modern history of the club is participation (unfortunately, only once...) in the European Cup Winners Cup at the season 1988-1989. Metallist's results:

1-st round:

Metallist - Borac (Jugoslavia) 0:2 and 4:0 at home.

2-nd round:

Metallist - Roda JC (Holland) 0:1 and 0:0 at home.

It was Metallist's first, but I beleave not last partisipation in Eurocups.

One of the best MX players was a medfeeld Sergey Kandaurov, now the captain of Maccabi Haifa F.C. (Israel). He was played for Metallist in 1988 - 1992 seasons.

Sergey was a dominant player in the probably best MX squad in 1991 - 1992. I think, he is one of the best MX players of all the times. A very technical player, has a good phisical fitness and a scoring capability. Assumed to be the best foreign player in Israel.
