Liverpool Football Academy-situated on the Liverpool Way in Kirkby, in the borough of Knowsley (10 miles outside Liverpool city centre)-is believed to be the biggest in Britain. About 10 million pounds has been injected on the Academy by Liverpool for the development and coaching of potential young players.
Liverpool can take pride in the number of stars produced at the academy. Steve McManaman, Dominic Matteo, Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen are all proof of the Liverpool youth policy. Steven Gerrard and Stephen Wright were the first players to move from the new Academy in to first team headquarters at Melwood when they were called up to the senior squad in 1999 by Gerard Houllier. These young rising stars definitely put Liverpool's academy up amongst the ranks of other famous football club academies like Ajax and rival Manchester United
The Academy is run by Steve Heighway, Liverpool's Director of Youth Football, a Reds winger(1970-1981). Under his control, children as young as 8 years of age can benefit from expert training sessions at least twice a week. Matches are arranged against other Academy sides every weekend. A full time staff of 18 provide extensive cover for the development of 180 young footballers, technically, educationally and socially.
