The Thursday team has opened the season 0-4. No Total Packages squad has been so humiliated since 1997 when we were overmatched in the Masher League at Golden Triangle. Thursday is a good league this year, and we are in for some rough treatment if we score badly.
A good offensive philosophy is to strive to never make an out. It is observed that many of us try for distance with a big uppercut much of the time despite the fact that ya hit one out of the park every 50 ABs, if at all. Otherwise, it's mostly corn. Think about this. A 7 inning game means we get 21 outs to play with. 10 guys in the lineup means on average everyone can make 2 outs with one to spare. Use this grading scale instead of taters, RBI, SLG % to rate your offensive performance for a game.
0 out = A
1 out = B
2 outs = C
3 outs = D
4+ outs = F
Not making outs is achieved by taking walks, and hitting line drives by selecting good pitches to hit. The old ways of hacking away worked on creampuffs. On Thursdays, we're the ones looking like creampuffs. Twice we've scored a big 3 runs in a game. That is not getting the job done in anybody's book. Wind blowing in, my arse. Wind in won't bother a line drive or a walk.
