Pugilistic Platoons
East Division
How does your team stack
up against the rest of the division?
Prince Albert Raiders,
Can you say enigma, this team throughout the year has been blessed with enough toughness to compete with the other teams in the division, however on many nights they seem to play like they've seen Jason. Jordon Clarke, Regan Darby, Scott Hartnell, Grant McNeill, Steve MacIntyre, gritty Blaine Stowards and even Jeremy Goetzinger should be able to give the Raiders a line up as tough as anyone, but it just hasn't proven to be the case. The Raiders may prove to be a *PITA* in the first round to their opposition, but a lack of consistency and being willing to pay the price every night IMO will cost this club any chance in the playoffs. Next year should be fun in P.A. though as returnees MacIntyre, Clarke and McNeill should keep most teams honest.
For a team that played the last month or so of the season
with as few as thirteen skaters for most games, it is amazing the Wheatie's
hung in their and didn't become roadkill on a long, straight stretch of
prairie highway. Much should be said about the remaining crew left on the
"Bounty" for the stretch drive as they never quit and every team knew they'd
been in a battle with the short staffed Brandon club. Led by the very tough
Randy Ponte, the Wheaties gave it their best shot every night. With Dan
Tetrault hurt most of the season, Scott McCallum sent home at the begining
of camp and Les Borsheim sent home late in the season Ponte was pretty
well left to provide all the toughness for the Wheaties and did a very
good job. With only Ponte left, the Wheaties have a tall order over the
summer to fill the void that will be left in their toughness with Borsheim
and Tetrault moving on.
Moose
Jaw Warriors, Grade B
The warriors finish up the year and end the playoffs
without second year sniper Jamie Lundmark, which should dim their playoff
chances substantially, however, this is a gritty, scrappy team and could
at least provide a war for their playoff rival. Kris Mallette, Bobby-Chad
Mitchell, Deryk Engelland, Brian Sutherby and Sean O'Connor can all mix
it up and should the warriors fall behind in a playoff series they could
be an ugly team to play out. Without Lundmark it looks like the Warriors
look toward next year and should still have plenty of toughness even with
the loss of Mallette, as O'Connor, Engelland, Sutherby and Mitchell should
all return for another season.
Regina Pats,
The Pats have a team that is hard to figure out, Barrett
Jackman and Travis Churchman are two very tough hombre's and they have
a solid scoring leader in Brett Lysak and a defenceman who can move the
puck in Scott Balan, however they are as inconsistent as a loose clutch.
The Pats ice a big line up and should be able to grind it out night in
and night out with any team, but you never know if Jekyl or Hyde will appear.
Thomas, Garth Murray and Travis Churchman will need to keep other teams
honest while Barrett Jackman will need to play like the reincarnation of
"Jason" to give the Pats any chance of getting past round two.
Swift Current Broncos,
The Broncos may not have surprised everybody with
their successful season, however they certainly surprised the Fighting
Major. What I thought would be a middle of the pack hockey team has played
a transition style game with enough grit and toughness to be successful
against any team. With guys like Matt Sommerfeld, Colton Orr, Dean Serdachny,
James Hiebert, Jeremy Reich and gritty little Ben Ondrus, the Broncos can
play it tough if teams prefer it that way. This is a team most feel will
play Kootenay for the right to face Calgary as the playoffs wind to a close
and it won't surprise me now if the Broncos cause a lot of headaches in
more ways than one, when these playoffs are over.
Saskatoon Blades,
This
Led by the "little fighter that could", Darcy Hordichuk, the Blades are
a team that should play it tough until the final whistle blows on their
playoffs this season. Not a team blessed with a lot of fiesty guys, they
play a tenacious forechecking games and hope for their breaks to come.
The toughness is pretty much handled by Hordichuk, but guys like Mark Forth
and Derek Halldorson chip in as well. The Blades had better look real hard
over the summer for another tough guy because if Hordi moves on to pro
next year, the Blades will have a huge hole to fill. I think the Blades
will be in tough to get out of the first round of the playoffs, but the
team they play will know they've been in a fight with Hordichuk in the
Blades line up!
