Derek "Boogey Man" Boogaard...L.W...6'7"...250lbs...06/23/82
Derek moves up to the number one spot after a nine fight month
in October, taking on an admirable group of solid heavyweights including
Mike Lee, Jeff Feniak, Matt Sommerfeld, Sean O.Connor, Jon Mirasty and
David Kaczowka twice. Quite an impressive list I might add. Derek has better
balance this year and seems stronger, however he still lacks knockout power
which should come when he learns to turn on his punches and throw not only
with his arms. All in all, an impressive month for the new number one.
Jeff "I'm back" Feniak...D...6'5"...220lbs...01/13/81
Feniak picked up the pace in October, picking up five fighting majors
with Gavin McLeod, Derek Boogaard, Keegan McAvoy, Chris Ovington and Jeff
Coulter for opposition. Feniak has the size and seems to have found the
get up and went as this is his biggest month in a while. Huge guy with
a long reach could challenge Boogaard for number one if he stays busy and
fights more of the big guys.
Mike "Wild Man" Lee...R.W...6'0"...230lbs...05/22/80
Mike moves down from one to three based on mediocre opponents
and no devastating victories we thought he'd be racking up with his well
known punching power, but it hasn't happened. Mike needs to stay in the
heavyweight class and start knocking guys on their ass to move back up.
Three of Mikes opponents were Gavin McLeod, Aaron Gionet and Derek Boogaard
in his six fight month.
Darren "I'm not Sarah"McLachlan...L.W...6'2"...223lbs...02/16/83
Darren hasn't been fighting as much as we thought he would, but three
of his four opponents were Eric Bowen, Ryan Jorde and Joe Suderman. Derek
will need to establish more consistency in the fight game in order to move
up where we think he should be. The fact that Derek is also a pretty good
hockey player, may not be lending to him dropping the leather as often.
Eric "Roller Hockey" Bowen...R.W...6'2"...225lbs...10/30/81
Pretty slow start to the season for the big guy from Portland,
though his competition was pretty solid. Three fights with Brett Schefflemaier,
Darren McLachlan and Garnet Exelby providing the opposition. Exelby if
he didn't win the fight certainly made Bowen look like he was trying to
read the label inside his jersey as he fought most of the fight looking
out from inside his jersey. Eric is a big, physical presence who needs
to let teams know his teammates won't be pushed around more often than
he does.
Gavin"Capt. Stubing"...D...6'5"...210lbs...01/01/80
Though Gavin only had a couple fights, he is a willing combatant
most of the time and his two fight month saw him have a "go" with Mike
Lee and Jeff Feniak. Gavin wears the "C" in Kelowna which may affect his
numbers, however he can throw 'em pretty good and needs to be respected.
Keegan "I wanna be a heavyweight" McAvoy...RW...6'0"...195lbs...02/01/81
Tough to put the smallish MacAvoy in the top ten heavyweights,
however with six fights and a ton of jam for more of a middleweight,
he's earned a spot. Jeff Feniak, Mike Lee, Brad Voth, Ryley Layden, Chris
Ovington and Chad Grisdale were his dance partners and this little "wolverine"
won't back down from anyone, even if the other guy breathes in a different
stratosphere. Love the guys heart and willingness to fight guys with huge
weight and height advantages.
Aaron "Monsieur Monster" Gionet...D...6'1"...200lbs...06/28/82
Aaron had a pretty good month for a guy who returned after getting
his memory altered for a short time in a fight with David Kaczowka early
in the month. The defending PIM leader in the west division had three fights
with a minor scuffle with Mike Lee, a victory over Robin Gomez and had
a serious loss of gray matter in his fight with Kaczowka, who knocked Aaron
out for a while with a concussion.
Ryan "Yawannago" Jorde...D...6'3"...210lbs...03/23/82
Recent addition to the Ams line up had a busy month in the central
with six fights and a few of his opponents were Robin Gomez twice, Colton
Orr and Grant McNeil. Jorde, in his second stint with the Am's, will
make his presence felt in the west division soon I'm sure. Big defenceman
with a long reach is physical and likes to scrap and should be moving up
the ladder quickly.
David "How much knuckle can a"Boychuk...D...6'4"...225lbs...07/16/81
A weak month for David with only one fight, that being against Metcalfe
of Seattle, not exactly a household name in the world of heavyweight fighters
in the dub. David needs to get busy and start fighting some known heavyweights
or risk dropping out of the top ten entirely.
