Tyler
"Pit Bull" Bouck -RW,
6'0", 185 lbs, 01/13/80
NHL rights: Dallas Stars
Tyler has battled some injury problems
so far this season, but with the addition of Derek Boogaard and Aaron Foster
as well as the maturing of Ryan Chieduch over the past season, Tyler has
been able to concentrate on being the Cougars team leader. If players decide
to come calling however, Tyler is more than willing and able to answer
the bell. Still one of the toughest middleweights in the league, Tyler
will probably see his PIM's decrease this season with the added support,
but don't get the pit bull mad or your likely to get a very terse response.
Travis
"You Know You're Soaking In It" Eagles-
RW, 6'4", 195 lbs, 05/05/81
NHL rights: Florida Panthers
Travis is still not fighting as
much as the fighting major would like to see, but he has brought a more
physical presence to the rink this year on a consistent basis. The addition
of a true heavyweight along with the capable Bouck, Chieduch and Foster
now give the Cougars plenty of toughness, allowing Travis to be a force
on the walls but also a guy who can drop the gloves effectively when the
going gets tough!
Aaron
"Fozzy" Foster - LW, 6'3", 219lbs,
11/14/82
is a seventeen year old kid who
has good size and the willingness to get his nose dirty when it comes to
scrapping. This has really helped the Cougars become a physical presence
every night this year. Tall at 6'4" and over two hundred pounds, Aaron
has been able to hold his own against the middleweights in the division
and with some experience could eventually give the Cougars two legitimate
heavyweights with Boogaard now in P.G.
Derek "Boogie Man" Boogaard
- LW, 6'2",
223lbs, 06/15/82
Although he's finished for the season,
due to injury, a one punch broken jaw, courtesy of a sledgehammer from
Mike Lee, Derek, I'm sure will work his way back into the top ten
next year. If Derek can get to a gym and take some boxing lessons
over the summer and work on what appears to be fragile confidence, this
6'6" monster could be tough to handle in the next few years.
SEATTLE THUNDERBIRDS:
Craig
"Combine Jockey" Olynick - D, 6'0",
180 lbs, 08/21/82
Craig has brought a fiesty and physical
game to the rink again this year and increased his willingness to drop
the gloves, making him a much more effective defenceman. His prescence
will definitley cause opponents to keep their heads up when he's
on the ice. With his beligerent style of play and becoming a better fighter,
Craig should help in creating more room for the highly skilled Seattle
forwards. Craig brings a total package to the rink, as he is more than
just a tough guy, he is also capable of carrying the puck and making good,
crisp passes to his forwards.
Jason
"Friday the 13th" Beckett - D,
6'3", 203lbs, 07/23/80
NHL rights: Philadelphia
Flyers
In the past also played the same way Rossiter did, using the stick and forgetting how to drop the gloves, however he seems to be realizing the way for a player with his physical attributes to make it to the pro's is to play physical and defend your teammates. Lets hope Jason continues on this path as his size should allow him to be a formidable scrapper and with any kind of consistency, could make a push to get into the top ten.
PORTLAND
WINTERHAWKS:
Johnathan
"Not Gary" Lupul - LW
- 6'1", 190 lbs, 05/20/82
Johnathan is a young guy who likes
to throw his weight around. It appears he may be a willing combatant
when it comes to dropping the gloves, though as of yet he hasn't dropped
them regularly. The offers will come with his belligerent style of
play, and we'll see if Johnathan has what it takes to be a contender in
the league as a 17 year old!!
Kent
"Sweet And" Sauer - D,
6'1", 226lbs, 05/10/79
NHL rights: Nashville Predators
Kent beat a young kid (Rypien, since
released by Spokane)pretty handily in the early going, but hasn't proven
himself since. He sure has the size (6'2", 220 lbs) to be a physical
force, but it will take a while to see whether the fisticuffs are a major
part of this guy's game. On size and reputation, we'll let Kent make or
break his ranking from here!
Michael
"Too Tough For Prince George" Kiesman - LW,
6'2", 187lbs, 01/02/79
Michael
had a couple of impressive showings a while back, but will need to win
a few big decisions to climb back to the rankings. A one sided drubbing
of Gavin McLeod and the "no mas" pulled by Curtis Rich when Michael came
calling were impressive. Michael has done a great job as captain of the
young Winterhawk team and he lets the young kids know that when the going
gets tough, so will he!
TRI-CITY AMERICANS:
Jeff
Katcher "In The Eye" -
D,
6'4", 195lbs, 04/16/79
Although suffering from concussions,
Jeff has the ability to become a legitimate tough guy in this league if
he gets healthy and starts fighting other tough guys straight up. His habit
in the past has been to try and get the jump on guys, which causes other
players and fans to lose respect for him. Jeff will have to mix it up a
little to prove himself worthy of a spot in "The Mayon Event".
SPOKANE CHIEFS:
Derek
"I Can't Fight But I Can" Schutz -
C, 6'3", 195lbs, 03/05/79
Is a guy who has always seemed on
the edge of breaking out and being a big tough center. This guy doesn't
mind standing back and throwing punches and will stand up for smaller,
younger teammates but has sufferd from bad shoulders. Two bad shoulders
may be the reason Derek has stayed away from the pugilistic side of his
game. It wouldn't take a whole pile to move this kid into the top ten or
at least an honorable mention.
Ryan
"Haunting The Blazers" Thorpe- LW,
6'4", 210 lbs, 02/06/81
NHL rights: Vancouver Canucks
Ryan has had a tough go of things
to start this season, with injuries and ending up in coach Mike Babcocks
doghouse apparently. In spite of this he still possesses the ability to
get it going at any time. Ryan took some one sided beatings last year and
that may be tempering his willingness to get involved , but if he wants
to become effective and get out of the doghouse, he needs to find that
fiestiness once again.
Kyle
"My Gloves Are Stuck" Rossiter - D,
6'3", 215lbs, 06/09/80
NHL rights: Florida Panthers
Kyle is a huge surprise this year because he's dropping the gloves and doing well when he does, but don't fret, he still uses the old Sherwood like the Grim Reapers Scythe. The combination of being a willing scrapper and being a little short of a full pull up stairs is a great quality in a tough guy which Rossiter seems to want to be this year. In past season's, Kyle was happy to use his stick like the Sultan of Swat, preferring to go deep with a home run swing, but this year is impressing with his willingness to get his fists bloodied, not just the blade of his stick. Kyle has fought less in the last while, but this seems to be more of a request from the coaching staff as they need him on the ice. With Kyle's style of play, I'm sure he'll still have to drop the gloves on occassion as he pisses of some more opponents.
KAMLOOPS
BLAZERS:
"Rockin'"
Robyn Regehr -
D, 6'4", 225 lbs, 04/19/80
NHL rights: Calgary Flames
Regehr is playing regular shifts with the Flames and playing pretty well. The fans in Kamloops are still hoping he will come back and finish the season with the Blazers. This would be a godsend for the toughness challenged Blazers. Jason Bone has been a heart and soul guy for the Blazers but is often dwarfed by the leagues new bread of enormous tough guys and would surely welcome back the gentle giant to help out in the fistic department. Robyn would help the Blazers gain back some repectability in regards to toughnesss they seem to have lost with the departures of Mike Brown and Ty Jones. As the Flames get better though, and the NHL playoffs approach, it looks more and more like the WHL and Blazer fans in particular have seen the last of Robyn Regehr.
KELOWNA ROCKETS:
Ryan
"Get Shorty" Cuthbert - RW,
5'10" 180lbs, 04/10/82
It's not often that a guy who can't
jump over the boards gets recognized as a tough guy, but this little spark
plug can throw 'em with all but the big heavyweights and come out just
fine. "Get Shorty" throws hard with both hands and never stops punching.
Also a very smart fighter, who uses his short sturdy stature to get inside
on taller fighters (who am I kidding, they're all taller than he is) and
get them off balance for his hard, fast punches. This vertically challenged
fighter is one of my favourites, and as they like to say in boxing, one
of the toughest pound for pound.
.
Nolan
"The Friendly Giant" Yonkman - D,
6'6", 215lbs, 04/01/81
NHL
rights: Washington Capitals
Nolan
drops out of the top ten. He hasn't been dropping the gloves since the
eastern road swing. He's a big tough kid who needs to use his weight and
size more to make the Rockets a more succesful team. This may happen
under new coach, Marc Habscheid, but until then he won't be making any
appearances in "The Mayon Event".
Gavin
"Captain Stubing" McLeod - D,
6'5", 200lbs, 01/01/80
NHL rights: Ottawa Senators
Gavin
hasn't been in the Christmas spirit lately, as he's been taking a lot more
than he's been giving, but he's shown up none the less and stays at number
eight. Gavin needs to start winning a few against some tough customers
as like Derek Boogard and Darren McLachlan to get himself back into
the top ten.
Curtis
"I Wish I Were" Rich - D, 6'4",
205lbs, 10/06/79
NHL rights: Tampa Bay Lightening
Another
Kelowna Rocket who's been having a tough go of it recently when dropping
the gloves, needs to win a few and gain some confidence or he'll be "poor"
as far as the top ten goes. Due to some inactivity by other scrappers and
the fact his mean streak needs to be respected, Curtis, like Gavin will
have to pick it up a notch or two to get back into "The Mayon Event".
