The Rockets take a big hit in the toughness department this season with the loss of big Mitch Fritz, who although showing a penchant for pursuing younger players, handled himself very well against all the league's tough guys last year and rarely lost. His absence will likely cause a few of the Rockets players to be a few inches shorter in their personal stats this year. Travis Moen has some offensive upside however and showed he can handle the fight game adequately. Joe Suderman, Gavin McLeod, Nolan Yonkman can all lend assistance against most of the league tough guys while Ryan Cuthbert and Carsen Germyn always seem more than willing to wade into the fray with other league middleweights. The always chippy Rockets will need to add another enforcer of the Fritz variety if they are to keep noted stickman Vern Fiddler alive and various other Rockets who like to play on the edge. Owner and GM Bruce Hamilton has a history of finding Gorillas in the Mist" and I'm sure this year will be no exception, look for the Rockets to up their grade before Christmas |
Joe "Soo Soo" Suderman.. .D...6'4"...195lbs...03/24/81 Suderman showed a willingness to go with some of the light heavyweights
last season and fared all right when the gloves dropped. Until the Rockets
get a legitimate heavyweight, he'll likely be one the of the guys along
with Gavin McLeod asked to do a lot of the Rockets scrapping. Suderman
can throw with both hands but is far more effective with the right. He
can also take a punch which makes him dangerous if he gets to hang in with
an opponent who throws a lot of punches early and then tires.
Quite similar to his ex-teammate Black in that he's a hard puncher. Also plays a bit of a s**t disturber role so he has no trouble finding opponents. Likes to throw his weight around and is probably as good a replacement for Vern Fiddler as you're gonna find. |
Ryan "Get Shorty" Cuthbert C/RW...5'9"...180lbs...04/10/82 The west division's version of Jordan Tootoo. This guy hits like
a big man when the gloves come off and he punches with authority as well.
Both hands get going when this guy fights and both have power. If he stays
in his weight class, he can and will do damage.

Marc Habschied has somehow found a way for this team to win without dropping the mitts. The closest thing they have to a legitimate heavyweight is their leader, Capt. Stubing. McLeod is big enough at 6'5" and 210lbs and more than capable of taking on the big guys but he doesn't seem to want to do it on a regular basis. As captain of the Rockets, he's probably being asked to stay on the ice instead of the penalty box as it seems most of the Rockets are this year. The acquisition of Paul Hurd from the T-Birds earlier this year added a little more grit to the team but again he hasn't done anything to show that he's the enforcer either. Travis Moen is probably a little gun shy after having his lights turned out in a chickenbleep scrap with "the lunatic from Lethbridge", Derek Parker, and Joe Suderman just isn't a real heavyweight, although he does like to play a physical style of hockey. The Rockets are winning right now but when the season starts winding down a teams are literally FIGHTING for a playoff spot, the Rockets are going to have to send someone to the plate and unless it's Capt. Stubing, it looks like it might be
three strikes and your out for the Ogopogo boys.
