By Chad Reuschlein
April 28th 2002 - In our first tournament, the 3 man novice at Apocalypse Paintball, our team of Chad, Scott, and Bryan finished 4th out of 11 in our division and 8th out of 22 overall. We didn't get a shot at the semifinals because they cut it down to the top four teams and instead of the top 8 due to the hail and rain that day, but we were pleased with our performance in our first tournament ever.
May 19th 2002 - In our second tournament, the second 3-man novice of the year at Apocalypse, our team of Chad, Scott, Adam, Trevar, finished 3rd in our division of eight in the prelims, and then finished 2nd in our semifinal division of four, then lost two of three finals games and took third place overall and came home with our first trophy. A movie has also been made. (Special thanks to Jesse for video footage)
June 9th 2002 - In our third tournament, which was our first tournament in a 3 event series at Stalker, we finished with 566 points, good enough for fifth place overall after the first event. The players participating were Chad, Scott, Adam, and Trevar. (special thanks to Zach for helping out all day)
June 23rd 2002 - In our fourth tournament, which was the third Apocalypse 3-man novice tournament, we finished second in the prelims, behind a team that went undefeated, and in the semi's we won our first game, which arguably was the best game our team played in the tournament. In our next two semifinals games, we lost a person right after the break in both of them, and got beat pretty quickly. highlights included us playing unstoppable in the morning, our first game, with only 2 'guns working, we nailed two on the break, and the last one 10 seconds later for a quick max. We finished 7th overall and won some great JT banners. We played very well as a team and it was a succesful tournament to say the least. (Special thanks to alternates Adam and Trevar for video footage.)
July 14th 2002 - In our fifth tournament, which was the second round of the 3- man novice series at Stalker, we finished in fifth place, playing with mainly alternates, players we had never played with before, we only dropped one game in the morning, but dropped a few in the afternoon, but got enough points to secure our fifth place in series points are within 200 points of the leader, so we have a chance at making it to the podium in the final round.
July 28th 2002 - In our sixth tournament, which was the only 5-man novice event at Apocalypse, we only dropped one game to a home team and had one stalemate throughout the prelims. In the finals, we lost our first game, but got away with the first pull and four elminations, then dropped the second, and won the third. We ended up at second place for the day and took home 5 brand new JT 2002 flame series jerseys, and a nice silver trophy.
August 11th 2002 - In our seventh tournament, the final round of the 3 man novice series at Stalker, Chad and Scott played with new player Mark, and dropped only 2 games on the insanely small airball field, the last game being the most exciting with excellent teamwork used to make a key bunker move and finish the tournament with the most skilled play of any team. Our teamwork paid off as we took home first place for the day, but unfortunately finished in fourth for the overall tournament and less than 100 points away from taking home a trophy, but our first first place finish was quite an accomplishment, with us 3 never having played together at a tourney, beating all 3 of the top teams in the tourney, and getting a first place finish in our first year.
September 29th 2002 - In our eighth tournament, the 5 man amateur tournament at Stalker, Chad, Nick, Scott and Matt played a man down for 2/3 rounds of the tournament. with 5 teams competing that meant 3 round robin series, and 3 games against every team. throughout the day, we beat the same two teams, and lost to the same two teams. No surprises at the podium as we took 3rd place, a big trophy and $250.
October 13th 2002 - In our ninth tournament, the 3 man midwest amateur tournament at Stalker, Chad, Scott, and Nick competed against 11 other teams, in a round robin tournament format. They only dropped one game to the tourney winning team, and stalemated one other. too many missed flag pull points kept us out of a sure second place and a bad ref call that put the team who should have had fourth into second. which knocked us down to 4th place, missing the trophy and prize money by 5 points.
October 20th 2002 - In our tenth tournament, the 3 man amateur tournament at Apocalypse. We played two round robins, 8 games each round. the first round on the airball field, we played pretty well, winning four and losing four, we came very close to winning some more games. We tried to make it up on the hyperball field, but after winning our first game, we fell into a four game losing rut, but we got it together and won our last three games pretty impressively. This tournament was probably the toughest competition we've had to play, and we had some action packed games, and we had a lot of fun. We finished in sixth place and won some JT T-shirts.
End of 2002 Comments - Over the course of the year, the team that started out with 3 guys playing novice with Chad's younger brother and his friend stepping in to help out, eventually taking on many different players in different tournaments ended up finding a winning combination of players at the end. Through all the trials and troubles we went through learning how difficult it is just to find good people who are willing to spend the time and money to play on a tournament team. It's amazing with what little experience and knowledge of the sport we had we did so well, constantly finishing in the top four or eight teams even when playing above our skill level in amateur tournaments, finally winning our first tourney and taking 3rd in the series was very rewarding. It was just as fun to place third in a 5 man tourney that we played with only four people. Above all we ended up seeing the great potential for a team and a feeling of anticipation to start the new season and accomplish more than we did this year.
