We
live in a world of meat eaters. Thousands upon thousands of animals
are slaughtered daily in factory farms for our consumption. Many
people dont realize what really goes on in these factories. They
assume all animals are raised on happy little farms and refuse to open
their eyes to what really goes on. In truth, animals spend their
pathetically short lives in cramped, filthy conditions, where they are
routinely beaten by workers. Slaughterhouses are supposed to follow
the Humane Slaughter Act, which states that all animals killed for food
should be killed as quickly and painlessly as possible. However,
a lot of workers are improperly trained in the use of their tools, and
many times animals get by workers without being properly stunned or killed.
So a large percentage of animals must be skinned, dismembered, or boiled,
all while they are still fully conscious.
I bet she's happy to be in
that cage. She'll have to endure daily beatings before she is finally
put out of her misery. Then she'll end up on your plate.
Consumption
of meat and animal fat has been linked conclusively with an elevated incidence
of heart failure, stroke, cancer, and other chronic diseases which kill
1.5 million Americans each year. Heart attacks are the number one cause
of death in the United States. You can reduce your risk of having a heart
attack by as much as 90% if you stop consuming meat, dairy products and
eggs.
This cow is what they call
a "Downer." Too weak to stand, they are usually bulldozed into a
pile and left to die.
Raising
animals for food also has a devastating impact on our environment. Animal
agriculture is associated with 85 percent of topsoil loss in the United
States, as well as rampant water pollution (the meat industry is the number
one pollutor of our water in the country). It not only pollutes our
water but wastes it as well. More water goes toward livestock production
annually than for all other purposes combined. The meat industry
is also a driving force in the destruction of our rainforests. McDonald's
alone is responsible for the destruction of 125,000 square miles of rainforest
yearly.
Oh, to be a chicken. . .
Packed into filthy, tiny, wire cages; forced to lay eggs until its slaughter
time. Not to mention in order to ensure you don't harm the other
chickens you get your beak cut off with a hotblade. And if you're
lucky enough to be a baby chicken you might get ground up alive to make
fertilizer. Doesn't that sound like fun?
This calf will spend it's
pathetic, short life in darkness lying in it's own feces. It will
not be able to move, and will be deprived of iron to make it anemic, because
they taste better that way.
"We have enslaved
the rest of animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur
and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were to formulatea religion,
they would depict the Devil in human form."
-William Ralph Inge
