CITY OF ORIPHAN (Kirkdale Region, Southern Dara)

Oriphan is quiet, serene, and beautiful. The reason is that the waters around for miles are treacherously rocky and dangerous for ships. Non-human access to this region is not welcome for similar reasons as the Dwarves to the north. Oriphan is a slow-paced, mature town with a lot of historical settings, namely three volumous libraries (one of which is the King's Royal Library). Here are the major buildings in this city:

Clock & Key Pub Sama Kitch (female bartender)
Galleon Pub Orak (former shipbuilder, pub owner)
Royal Standard Tavern Terin Rotha (upper class former statesman)
King's Royal Library Very busy place, used for secret meetings
Library of Daran History Historical books (not very well organized)
Hurzaan's Library Contains books of interest to druids
The Spritely Tailor Tailor of fine (expensive) clothes. Jonas Uzran
Precious Pieces Gems, precious metals, money changed appraised
The Black Bear Blacksmith (Burnaby Bear is the hairy owner)
Worn Leather Stables Erin Blackfoot (rents and keeps horses)

This city wouldn't be known except for the fact that the King and Queen live here. They are royalty by blood only, and only take the time to sign legal papers if it will prevent too much noise. The dignitaries moved to escape political life and raised there kids here. They have a stately mansion near Brennock and have lived there ever since. They welcome (human) visitors as long as they display some class.

-rumour has it that in the tropical forests surrounding Oriphan, there lies a great treasure.
-the treasure has been there historically, but recent disappearances of travelers has brought the question of the treasure (and its guardians) back into question.

THE PLOT

-initially the characters meet an attractive, foreign looking girl who is recruiting 'a few good men' to return to a far-off land for mercenary work. The girl's name is Lorena (see number one above). She always keeps her hand in her pocket (because her right hand has scales on it). If asked why she keeps her hand in her pocket, she will give any excuse - "because it has a nasty wound", "because it's sprained". if the characters get suspicious and see her hand, she will tell them that it was burned years ago, or that she was born with a skin deformity. In reality, she is one of the long lost nation of Yuan-ti.
-there is a group of 20 Yuan-ti who have collected around an ancient druidic site, where legend maintained a treasure of vast power. They found the treasure site but were unable to conquer its menacing guardian (the Yugoloth). Since they couldn't defeat the beast themselves, they decided that whoever did defeat the beast, would fall into their trap and they would gain the treasure anyway.
-the treasure is a Rod of Cancellation and a Cubic Gate.
-the Yuan-ti are trying to create as many Histachii servants as possible. They have set up a pool trap in a clearing. There is a statue in the middle of the pool, with gems for eyes. The gems are quite nice, being worth 500 gp each. If both gems are plucked from the statue, then the pool magically freezes solid (so characters will only be able to move from the waist up). Sixteen Histachii will then attack.
-the Yuan-ti half-breeds and Abominations have the Purebloods 4-7 posing as humans in
cells. The characters may attempt to free them, but with face an onslaught of Histachii.
-when the characters face the Yugoloth, the Purebloods (who were set up in the cells posing as prisoners) will pretend to help them. However, as soon as the Yugoloth falls, they will turn on the characters.
-once that battle is done, the characters will have to face the Half-Breeds.
-there is a room with a sphere of annihilation. Simm (a half-breed) controls this from another room. (Note that the characters can use the rod of cancellation or the cubic gate to destroy the sphere of annihilation).

GAME MASTER NOTES

When I ran this adventure, the characters went to the temple first, but did not find the secret entrance to find the 'prisoners'. Then they went directly to the cave, where the ambush was to take place (where the Yugoloth was). So, the prisoner trick didn't even get played (in fact, the 'prisoners' are still there!).

To make matters worse, as soon as the characters found the treasure, they pressed the Cubic Gate. So the adventure wasn't finished. For the record, I would say that a Cubic Gate makes a rotten treasure item. They ended up in a random land, and (of course) I was fully unprepared for this! It was fun, though.

This adventure took about six hours to run, but that is way longer than necessary. We spent a lot of time playing out the details of "getting there". One warning about this adventure is that by running it, it is easy to overpower the characters (since the Yuan-ti can cast polymorph other at will).
