The word fairy/faerie
means 'enchanted beings', and there are many different kinds: pixies, goblins,
sprites, elves and leprechauns, they are all different forms of faeries.
While the image that we have in mind is quite different: a faerie is a
small creature which has tiny wings, is pretty and can fly. That actually
is a pixie (one of the many forms of faeries).
Faeries live in woods
and fields, or in magic kingdoms human never see. A faerie (pixie) which
likes human beings uses magic to help them while the one which dislikes
mortals (leprechauns, goblins, elves, etc.) makes their lives a misery.
Pixies (or 'fair folk')
are like tiny winged human beings. It is said that they sometimes cluster
around a newborn baby, shaking stardust from magic wands to give it good
luck, beauty and happiness (hey, that reminds me of sleeping beauty but
it was a bit different).
In faerie tales, most
of the time the main character of the story has a pixie friend or a faerie
godmother (like in Cinderella) who uses magic spells to help them.
And of course, the
'tooth faerie', children believe that if your tooth comes out and you leave
it under your pillow while you sleep, the tooth faerie will take it and
leave a silver coin (or a gift, usually money) instead.
As
far as I am concerned, I have always imagined a faerie as a young woman
(absolutely gorgeous and looks that you would kill for) with long hair
and looks like a normal human girl (except for the wings).
FAERIE
RINGS
You may have seen small
circles of grass in the woods darker than the area around it. These circles
are called 'faerie rings' and it is believed that they are caused by faerie
dancing. The faeries form a ring and dance around at night, you can hear
them if you creep up quietly and can watch them but BEWARE, anyone who
joins them is doomed as while dancing what may seem like one night to you
may be 50 or 100 years. Your house, family, friends all may have disappeared
and no one would recognize the wrinkled old person you may have become.
Pixies are quite fascinating
creatures, they are dainty, pretty and quite friendly but the other kinds
of faeries may not be so friendly as these pixies, which you will find

Faeries, i.e. pixies are
an all time favorite beings of mine, apart from vampires (vampires - they
are the best, especially DRACULA). Of course, vampires belong to quite
a different, in fact altogether different category than faeries. Faeries
are not 'undead' beings while vampires are. I think i'll
do a page on undead creatures too, someday.
The greatest thing about
faeries is that they are cheerful creatures, no problems, no depressions,
no restrictions, i'm sooo envious.
I wish I had wings
and could fly away like them: fly to faraway lands which very few people
have seen, roam the blue sky and help people who need it.
