a cram school located in the Azabu Juuban district of Minato-ku in the city of Tokyo, Japan
First appearance: Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Episode 008
Final appearance: Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Episode 008
History: Garoben was a female Youma recruited by
Jadeite to help him gather energy from human beings in order to revive
Queen Metallia. To this end, Garoben assumed human form and posed as an
instructor at a cram school known as Crystal Seminar where she advocated
the use of the Crystal Disk, a revolutionary new piece of computer software
that could allegedly turn anyone into a genius with prolonged usage. Little
did any of her students suspect that the diskette in question actually
contained a brainwashing program designed to drain them of their neural
energy - the "energy of their knowledge and intelligence" - while
simultaneously turning them into mindless human zombies under her complete
control.
Following Usagi Tsukino's appearance at Crystal Seminar in the guise of
a nurse and her subsequent transformation into Sailor Moon, Garoben revealed
her true from, and, in doing so, vindicated Ami Mizuno, whom Luna had incorrectly
suspected of being a Dark Kingdom agent. After incapacitating her Sailor
Soldier adversary, the Youma attempted to kill Ami when efforts to drain
her of her neural energy proved futile due to the fact that she had relied
on her own intelligence for her academic performance instead of on the
Crystal Disk. Unfortunately for Garoben, her would-be victim turned out
to be a Sailor Soldier herself, who - following her first ever transformation
into Sailor Mercury - distracted the monster with her "Shabon Spray"
long enough for Sailor Moon to destroy her with her "Moon Tiara Action".
Height: Estimated at
6'0'' (183 cm), never accurately measured (human form); estimated at 7'0'' (213 cm), never accurately measured (Youma form)
Weight: Unknown
Eyes: Brown (human form); black irises
against yellow corneas (Youma form)
Hair: Brown (human form); green (Youma
form)
Skin: Red (Youma form)
Abilities: Aside from the ability to assume human form, Garoben,
in keeping with her title as "The Youma of Knowledge", had the
rather unusual habit of quizzing her adversaries and only attacking them
if they were unable to provide her with the correct response to her questions.
Failure to give the right answer to her first such query on Newtonian physics
- "Why did the apple fall from the tree?" - would result in the
monster raising her left arm and firing a barrage of razor-sharp test papers
at her opponent until such time as the proper response was given, whereupon
the projectiles would disappear. The inability of her adversary to meet
her second challenge - "Explain gravity in fifty words or less."
- would make her send the mindless human zombies her Crystal Disks had
helped to create after them. It remains uncertain as to whether or not
giving the right answer to the second question would have dispatched this
particular threat with equal swiftness, though it is known that the degree
of control she maintained over her brainwashed victims was apparently dependant
on the strength of her own will and could be disrupted if her concentration
were broken, such as by exposing her to cold temperatures, for example.
In addition, Garoben was capable of reshaping the tissue of her left arm
to form a rather nasty-looking ax which she could use as a weapon.
Paraphernalia: While masquerading as a teacher at Crystal Seminar,
Garoben used a series of special diskettes containing a brainwashing program
- known as Crystal Disks - to drain her students of their neural energy
and put them under her control. She could then direct these individuals
- now reduced to little more than automatons - to act in whatever manner
she chose, such as using them to attack her opponents, for example. Garoben
also used razor-sharp test papers as projectile weapons.
