'Compact Space' series

These novels are all set in an area of space where humans are unknown, and the heroines are the lion-like race of the Hani, whose swashbuckling, flamboyant space-farers are all females, and their allies the devious bear-like Mahendo'sat. Other species with whom they trade (warily!) are the weasel-like Kif, the elegant, delicate Stsho and the methane-breathing Knn. Brilliantly realised worlds with real depth.

A psychological novel, a murder mystery and an examination of power on a grand scale, encompassing light years and outsize lifetimes.A geneticist is murdered by an adviser, but the scientist is replicated in the lab, leaving a prodigy who attempts to chart a different fate. The book is intense and complex yet always presented with the flow of true storytelling. C.J. Cherryh's Cyteen forecast much of what was debated recently when the successful cloning of a mammal was announced. She deftly weaves a complex, multi-character plot that keeps a reader's interest while at the same time providing psychological and physical action that drags the reader through what is admittedly a long text. Published here in one volume, this award-winning novel is one that has the potential to teach us about our future before our future actually arrives. Where Clarke forecast satellites, Cherryh examines the issues surrounding cloning in clinical detail. She does not shy away from the questions of humanity that arise from cloning a human being.

Foreigner proceeds from the venerable premise of the lost starship whose crew had to land the ship wherever possible. It ended up on a planet whose native race, the atevi, practice--among other interesting habits--registered assassinations. Two centuries after the landing, only one human, the paidhi, is allowed out of the human enclave--and at the opening of the book, he is the object of an unregistered assassination attempt. The subsequent tale is one of those Cherryh novels that is longer on world building, exotic aliens, and characterization than on action, although it is not short on that.

The third volume of Cherryh's latest saga, begun by Foreigner (1994) and continued in Invader (1995), commences six months after the human ship Phoenix "discovered" a planet shared by the descendants of marooned human colonists and the nonhuman atevi. The atevi are trying to advance their space program in order to be classified as a developed race; that is, they're involved in one of the classic sf plots, which Cherryh handles as well as her admirers expect of her. While the atevi labor, the planet's humans, the crew of the Phoenix, and the atevi, too, are splitting into factions and creating so many conflicts that a sensible reader could not reasonably expect them all to be resolved this time. They are not, which rather strongly hints at one further installment, at least, in the saga

The Keltiad

Ms. Kennealy-Morrison has, by placing the story cycle of the Arthurian myths into a "Keltic" star-empire, successfully molded the tales into a space epic of the first order. This first of the cycle follows the young Arthur as he begins to come into his heritage, encountering those folk who will come to mean the most to him in the years ahead. The author successfully captures both the flavor of the myth and the meaning of what it is to BE a "Kelt", so thoroughly as to make the reader feel homesick for a land we see only in these pages. Arranged in distinct trilogies, the keltiad is a projection of the Celtic mythos into the far future. Each trilogy can be read separately.
