There's something for almost any kind of McCaffrey fan in this diverse assortment of 15 short fiction pieces never before gathered in one volume. The heroine of the engaging title story, a new Pern novella and the only Pern tale in the collection, is somewhat akin to Menolly in Dragonsong in that she, too, eventually rises above her birthright to follow the destiny that her particular talent dictates. Perhaps the strongest inclusion here is "The Greatest Love," also a novella, which predicted in 1977 (when McCaffrey wrote it) the extrauterine fertilization of a human ovum to produce a healthy baby (actually a set of identical twins) whose proxy mother is their paternal aunt; told from the point of view of the young female doctor who performed the procedure, the story focuses on the turmoil engendered by the maternal grandmother, a despicable termagant who raises the question of incest. "Duty Calls" is an exciting tale in McCaffrey's Ship Who Sang series (in which the latest full-length novel is The Ship Who Won ). Other stories focus on everything from spaceship adventure, shifting time-storms, and the unwitting near-destruction of sentient life-forms by human colonists on a distant planet (and the fitting, if gruesome consequences)--to ghosts and romance. There's even a futuristic variation of Cinderella in this veritable cornucopia
