J.R.R. Tolkien is one of this century's most beloved and enigmatic writers. Yet, surprisingly, little is known about the personal life of the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. After a traumatic childhood, Tolkien experienced the bloody trenches of World War I as a young soldier. He lived most of his life as an Oxford scholar in the surrounds of a cloistered academic community. 15 full-color illustrations.

The Hobbit
Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, is a peaceful sort who lives in a cozy hole in the Shire, a place where adventures are uncommon--and rather unwanted. So when the wizard of Gandalf whisks him away on a treasure hunting expedition with a troop of rowdy dwarves, he's not entirely thrilled. Encountering ruthless trolls, beastly orcs, gigantic spiders, and hungry wolves, Bilbo discovers within himself astonishing strength and courage. And at the ultimate confrontation with the fearsome dragon Smaug, the hobbit will brave the dangers of dark and dragon-fire alone and unaided.

The Chronicles of Narnia is a true masterpiece of the world's literature, and I have never met anyone who has read it and feels otherwise. This is one of the very few sets of books that should be read three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life.
In brief, four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, with continual threading of the timeless issues of good and evil, faith and hope. This boxed set edition includes all seven volumes of the story. Very Highest Recommendation

The novel, the first of a trilogy, is in part a retelling of the Christ story. It is an account of the voyage of Ransom, a linguist, to the planet Malacandra (Mars), where he learns that Thulcandra (Earth) is called the silent planet because there has been no communication from it in years. The spiritual being in charge of the latter, having been corrupted, has essentially cut Thulcandra off from the other planets. Ransom is ultimately sent back to Thulcandra with the two earthlings who had kidnapped him and brought him to Malacandra. The novel gives voice to Lewis' concerns about the secularization of society and argues that a return to traditional religious belief is the only means of salvation

The second book of Lewis's sci-fi trilogy, this is a sharp, sophisticated fantasy that deals with an old problem--temptation--in a new world, Perelandra. Lewis' sweeping prose creates a remarkable vision of an Eden that knows no pain, and the book as a whole leaves the reader with a deep sense of joy and an appreciation of the loveliness of human life. Lewis is quite deliberately retelling the Christian story of temptation, and the theology espoused in the arguments between Ransom and the devil's advocate, Weston, watched with some confusion by Venus' "Eve", show a deep and profound grasp of the methods of evil, and the twisting, roundabout attempts to persuade her to disobey God. Within this story, Lewis disputes and gives an answer to the still prevalent assumptions of much of science fiction - that man must survive at all costs and extend his seed to the ends of the universe. The physical fight with Weston, told around more stunning descriptions of the natural beauty of Venus, suggest that evil is not all-powerful, and Ransom himself recognises the smallness of his actions against the great dance of life, which is the theme of the fast, moving conclusion to the work.

The last book of Lewis's sci-fi trilogy is a breakneck journey of suspense in which Dr. Ransom must choose sides in a battle between science and ethics. Like Perelandra and Out of the Silent Planet, this is a compelling work of fiction that is also, at its heart, a timeless allegory of good and evil. Although a Christian theme runs throughout the trilogy, when it is presented in That Hideous Strength it becomes more accessible. The evil in the book could and does happen. The basic good in the book is no less extraordinary (with certain exceptions). The adventures of Ransom on other planets in the first two books of the trilogy were to prepare him for the battle on Earth in That Hideous Strength.

Dubbed the "apostle to skeptics, " Lewis was a profound thinker with the rare ability to communicate the philosophical and theological rationale of Christianity in simple yet amazingly effective ways. In The Pilgrim's Regress, Lewis records his search for meaning and spiritual satisfaction that eventually led him to Christianity. God in the Dock contains 48 essays and 12 letters that cover topics as varied as the logic of theism, good and evil, miracles and ethics. And in Christian Reflections, he addresses Christianity and literature, Christianity and culture, petitionary prayer, modern theology and biblical criticism.

C.S. Lewis' book on the four loves: affection (between a parent and a child), friendship, romantic love, and charity or love towards God is truly a remarkable piece of work. Professor Lewis writes with an easiness rare amongst writers, speaks deliberately and with wisdom in his words. He speaks of trust and of hearts, of humanity and humility. Truly, this is a moving book as well as a book which takes the seriousness of love rather lightly and playfully, for good reason. The seriousness and playfulness of love are but opposite sides of the same coin.

. This is C S Lewis' masterpiece. The book is deeply psychological, and the three sisters in the story are representative of Plato's Tripartite Soul: Orual, the narrator, is the 'Logos' or the reason; Psyche is the 'Thumos', or the passions; and Redival is the 'Bios' or the animalistic passions. The book is based upon Apuleius' 'Metamorphoses', but adds a Christian level to the story. Like The Space Trilogy, it illustrates Lewis's belief, taken from St. Augustine's 'City of God', that the gods are not supreme beings, and are not incompatible with the God of monotheism. They are equivalent to angels and demons. So, in 'Till We Have Faces', the kingdom worships one major goddess, Aphrodite (standing for God the Father), her Son, Cupid (representing Christ), and a third figure embodied by the Wind (the Holy Spirit). The tree on which Psyche is sacrificed ("the Blessed must be the Accursed" represents the Cross.-- the most holy person takes on the sins of the people).

The stories tell mostly of Mowgli, an Indian boy who is raised by wolves from infancy and who learns self-sufficiency and wisdom from the jungle animals. The book describes the social life of the wolf pack and, more fancifully, the justice and natural order of life in the jungle. Among the animals whose tales are related in the work are Akela the wolf; Baloo the brown bear; Shere Khan, the boastful Bengal tiger who is Mowgli's enemy; Kaa the python; Bagheera the panther; and Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose
