HYPERTEXT FILENAME: RAH-86 "Gryphon"
In the early 1990s there was an attempt to upgrade the rather antiquated reconaissance and attack helicopters. Their current models were almost thrity years old and inadequate for the needs of the modern battlefield. Most of those models had either limited range or firepower and their detection and stealth abilities couldn't keep up with the increases in electronic surveillance.
The Collapse along with advent of vectored thrust aircraft (AVs), signalled the end of the United States original "Force XXI" project. The plans for the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 "Comanche" never really got past the early prototype stage.
Recently, a few aircraft fitting the spcifications of the old Comanche, but with significant modifications, have been seen in the arsenals of several smaller security firms. They have successfully defended against attacks from AVs and heavy vehicles. Also there is a HighWay report that a one of these "Gryphon" helicopters was involved in an extraction of a corporate executive. The statistics here were gained from information volounteered by their owners and field reports. Comanche with open missle bay

But the most notable changes have been the replacement of the co-pilot with the same PsI seen in submersibles and EVPAs in the recent Corporate War, and the AV assisted manuevering system. According to rumor, these systems allow the aircraft to perform a perform a "loop" manuever, but most experts claim this to be the unlikely ramblings of unreliable pilots. In general, AVs are still favored by most military and corporate securty forces.

As with the original Comanche, the Gryphon has a reduced radar return signal due to its configuration (+15 to Radar detection rolls) as well as a low visibility (it's only 9' wide from the front, it's rotors are silenced, and a very streamlined 39' long) and automatically cools its own engine exaust except when the AVAM is active.

Alternatively, it can carry two 430-gallon ferry tanks to self-deploy over 1,260 nm, or crashworthy 230-gallon tanks for more than four hours of combat endurance. Comanche usually stows a three-barreled, 30 mm DPU turreted nose gun that can shoot 1500 rounds per minute in the detatchable gun pod, but other options may be used.
Notes: To maintain its low profile, the Comanche features a fully retractable missile armament system, enabling it to hide missiles and rockets in I-RAMS (Integrated Retractable Munitions Systems) bays. Also, images provided are archival footage from 1996. The current manufacturer is believed to be Novalogic.
